Bar Jovel, Bang Niang

A new and exciting addition to Khao Lak's entertainment scene is the new Bar JOVEL in Bang Niang which opened in late November 2009. It owes its name to the origin of the owners, Westphalia in Germany and its concept, they say, is to provide the most beautiful and relaxing bar with an outstanding service and many extras. The bar is situated on the opposite side of the highway from the famous “Tsunami Police Boat 813” in Bang Niang and has a Beergarden stretching along the Bang Niang river. The JOVEL includes an indoor waterfall and huge creeks, different platform levels, cosy corners, a free library, free daily newspapers from around the world, free Internet (WiFi) and many more amenities.

It serves beer, food, coffee, cocktails, wines etc. and the beer range includes some famous German beers like Flensburger, Veltins, Koestritzer, Weihenstephan and Federbräu as well as Thai and Asian Beers, like Singha, Chang, Tiger, Leo, etc..

At least three times per week (Mondays, Wednesday and Saturdays - great to stay on after a visit to the adjacent Bang Niang market) there is a free concert of local artists (Isan Music, Ska, Reggae, Jazz, Blues, etc.) It is planned in the near future to have live concerts featuring some of the best and most famous bands in Thailand.

The Jovel is under the same ownership as the the Khao Niau Restaurant, which is directly in front of it and specialises in Isan cuisine from the north of Thailand. The Jovel Bar Menu as well as a listing of the different events/concerts can be found at the new website http://www.khao-niau.com

We went to the Anda & Band + Friends Concert last night and enjoyed it very much. The headline act, Anda, was scheduled to start at 10pm to allow for locals to attend after finishing work. Anda's Band were an extremely young looking but very proficient outfit who performed several openers on their own of fairly hard Thai Rock which softened with the arrival of Anda who performed what was described to me as Thai Soft Rock/Sing along/Folk.very well and showed why she is one of Southern Thailand's most popular artists.

We left at 11pm so as to catch second half of Man Utd and Burnley match, so enjoyed much of a great concert and saw all the goals of a good win.

Looking forward to next Saturday's concert with Pongsit Kampee who is one of Thailand's most famous and popular singer/song writers.

Bar Jovel is, I think, now Khao Lak's best Bar and beergarden in terms f venue, position and excellent bar area, even when no concert in progress. Well worth a visit!

We went to both of these concerts last night being Pongsit Kampee & Band. He was brilliant singer, guitarist and harmonica player with an excellent band. Poltically inspired folk/country was what I was told it would be. Politically inspired perhaps it was as of course we didn't understand a word but his connection with the largel and largely Thai crowd sitting drinking mainly, like us, from 3 litre towers of draught Chang, was very strong particulary on what were obviously his most famous songs. Different to Job2Do as folk/country turned out to be Thai Rock and pretty Heavy Rock at times. Reminiscent of Bob Dylan or Neil Young and Crazy Horse. We left at 1.30 to the Snapper Brothers rocking away. Great night in what is unoubtedly Khao Lak's best open air live performance spot. Hope there are some acts on when you come to Khao Lak.
