Khao Lak Restaurants

Trying to compile a dual purpose list - (1) romantic spots with perhaps a great view and (2) cheap, friendly places with perhaps a fun environment. Check out this initial list below and tell me what you think.

Staying at the Le Meridien Khao Lak Beach & Spa Resort, so ones within a 15-20 min taxo ride would be nice. First vist to the area.

The Candle

Hill Tribe

Chong Fah

Bussada

Khao Lak

Bangsak Garden

The Candle - small, intimate restaurant about 200 metres down the Beach Road on the right from the highway in Bang Niang. See map at www.khaolakforum.de/index.php… No view other than the road. Level of decor, service and Cuisine (Thai fusion) higher than other local restaurants with prices a bit higher to reflect this. Still great value though.

Hill Tribe - The last restaurant on the left on the highway as you leave Bang Niang towards Bang La On. A large open dining area furnished in Northern Thai style from Chiang Rai reflecting the extremely friendly owners and their very different (to most found in Khao Lak) and delicious cuisine. Very reasonably priced. Locate on main highway in slightly isolated are with no view as such. Do a search on this forum to find many supporters of this fairly new addition to the Khao Lak dining scene.

Chong Fah - a simple local restaurant located right on Bang Niang Beach with front tables located in the open on the sand - great for dinner at sunset or under moonlight. Very reasonable prices with great seafood and fish specials, especially when marlin and/or tuna is on the menu.

Bussada - one of the, rightly, most popular restaurants in Bang La On, the main township of Khao Lak. A bit pricier but still excellent value for a menu that offers different options than most. Specials sometimes, including, unusually for KL, a glass of wine. Set back on the main strip so good for people watching. Great for lunch too if you are in town shopping.

Khao Lak Seafood - on the highway in Bang La On adjacent to the simple but excellent (Isan - spicy Northern Thai) Veerapat's Kitchen which in turn is next to the very popular Happy Snapper Bar (best live music in Khao Lak) so a good dine, drink and enjoy music night out option. As the name suggests it has a great range of fresh fish and seafood as well as meat and veggie options. Very reasonably priced.

Bangsak Garden - one a handful of restaurants located on the Bang Sak Promenade which is about 10 minutes north of Le Meridien. There are two promenades, the further one is the one on which the Haadson resort is located. Each have the kitchen and undercover dining area with open air dining across the road (not busy) in small dining cabanas or plain tables on the grass, under the trees, directly overlooking the beach and ocean. One of the best spots in Khao Lak for al fresco dining. This and the other restaurants here serve mainly locals for whom this is a popular dining and picnic spot so prices are low but tourists are made very welcome. Great for lunch with time walking the beach or using the loungers provided by some or at sunset for the fabulous views.

I hope this helps.

Enjoy!

Hi,

Staying at the Le Meridien you are within walking distance of two beach restaurants which have great views and are cheap and friendly and over the years have become favoutites in Khao Lak. The Rim Lay is a very short walk along the beach and within a 25 minute walk you will find the Boatyard rest just past the Sarojin.I do hear that some new restaurants have opened up along the beach if you turn right and go over the bridge.

Julie

The Rim Lay sits on,if not the prettiest beach in Khao Lak...It would be one of the smallest or part thereof one part of a larger beautiful beach....However,the location is absolutely superb and don't forget your camera....

We met the owner(very friendly)when we went surfing in front of the restaurant, but unfortunately did not dine there,....After all,it was the low season and he was closed...!!

Just a short walk from Le Meridien is a small family run restaurant called Paradise. It is very friendly and even better the food is terrific. (My Mum and Dad still rave about it regularly!)

If you want something non thai, there is also an Indian restaurant not far from La Flora resort... sorry can't recall the name, but it was yummy too.

The Indian restaurant in Bang Niang near La Flora (probably best in Khao Lak) is called Inders Chuller.

The Khao Niau Isan restaurant in Bang Niang near the 711 on the highway now has a superb Bar and Beer Garden with resident Thai singer/guitarist, guest bands including two of Thailand's top groups scheduled for appearances early in 2010. Details to be announced.

The Everyday Lazy House Restaurant (note revised name as owner was one of the regular artists at the original famous (in Khao Lak) Lazy House Bar) has now remodelled ots dining and bar area but ios still sering consistently good food.

A good choice for Thai seafood is The Lobster restaurant in Bang Niang.

It's located on the Bang Niang Beach road (left hand side as you head towards the beach), at the side of the night markets in Bang Niang.

Regards,

Mike.

I too can vouch for the Lobster, we had a great meal there. We paid for the fish and drinks and the sides were free, I think this was because we were out of season though!

As well as these recommendations and the more popular places, please try the small local restaurants that have set up mainly in Bang Niang in the litle sois (side roads) off the the main beach road opposite the Mukdara. There are some great places struggling for business now with the reduced number of visitors about. Most are offering special prices or set meals.
