What was the reason for the carnival? do these take place frequently - just wondering if we are likely to see one in Jan.
To boost tourism in the region for this high season period. the event was held for 3 days from 13-15 nov 2009 only
As I understand it, It was not a normal carnival but a presentation of the excellent quality of the hotels' kitchens, arts and crafts and live music on two stages with dancers. I must admit I've not seen anything like this before albeit last year there was a Music Festival staged on Bang Niang Beach in March. I too hope there will be more when we return.
We plan to have this kind of event in the second week of Nov every year.
I hope there will be more at other, more popular, times of the year.
It was an interesting event. The first day - Friday started great, with the procession of elephants and VIPS, beautiful costumed ladies etc. We watched from the comfort of Tarzans. We were just about to go and watch a local band perform when the heavens opened (so we stayed with our Chang!!) The fireworks went ahead and they were very good. The Hotels all put on a good show with lots of food, the Thai Navy were well represented and there were stalls selling clothes and odds and ends. We went back on the Saturday and again it was packed, but this time we got to see the Moo Moo cabaret - lots of excellent Photos! Even Toy and his wife in Tarzans were unaware of how big the 'party' was planned for this year.

Great find. Thanks. You can almost taste and smell the food!!!!
There is usually some sort of big celebration to mark the official opening of the season in Khao Lak. In the past there has been a Clean Up Day starting from the beach this has developed into a bigger celebration which you will find takes up the main road for a few days of wonderful food and music. It's a great atmosphere with something to delight everone's senses!
