HELP! Tours in Khao Lak

Planning to use Khao Lak as our central location for exploring the Andaman Coast. Can anyone give me some information on good tour companies that we can book upon arrival. If possible we would like to go on day trips to the following places:

Similan Islands

Surin Island

Phang Nga Bay

Khao Sok National Park (overnight here)

If we had to pick between Similan and Surin Islands which should we go to (we are snorkelers, not divers). If we overnight in Khao Sak should we stay in the tree house or on the lake? Do these need to be booked in advance (we would prefer not to)?

Is there any surfing in February or March? If so, where?

Thanks!

Hi....I can only help you with surfing in Khao Lak....!!....

I surfed Khao lak for the first time last July/August which is peak period for the surf season....

Waves can get up to head height during this period..

Tho' this is not to say that you will not score waves in February or March...It's just that it won't be as prevalent....

Matt from Pakarang surf shop scored fabulous head high waves at Cape Pakarang last new year's day....which is a rarity but it happened....

The fact that Khao Lak is further north than Phuket means that this coastline is a little bit more exposed to Indonesian swells....So,if Sumatra is pumping, there's a chance Khao Lak will get some runoff of that swell....

The best beach break in Khao Lak is Nang Thong Beach/Bang La On....

Or the rivermouth in front of Apsarus Resort at Pakarang Beach....

If the swell is up and the wind is right, and you are experienced.....Head for Cape Pakarang to surf Taxi's(right hand reef point break)or Corner(left hand reef point)...Both breaks are extra long on their day....Average up to 150 meters.....On larger days up to 500 meters....

The best waves in Thailand IMHO....!!

Best bet would be to contact Matt at Pakarang surf shop in Bang La On and he will help you all he can with board rentals and surf locations.....Matt is a top guy...!!!....Last but not least,I do hope you score waves in Feb/March..!!

If not, then return sometime during mid year.....Better chances..!!..

And....NO CROWDS.....!!!

Great reply from Cocotang - but he's not convinced me to be other than a "silver surfer"! LOL

As for tours, have a look at the following links:

http://www.khaolaklovers.com/ (What to see and do)

www.khaolaklanddiscovery.com/bookings.php (biggest Khao Lak based tour operator)

http://www.mykhaolak.de/touren.html (German site but comprehensive list of tour operators in KL)

khao-sok-explorer.e-monsite.com/accueil.html (Khao Sok based operator for tours there and Cheow Lan Lake)

http://www.limestonelaketours.com/ (perhaps best specialised operator for Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake)

You can pick tours up when you arrive and shop around, particularly to such as Phang Nga Bay - don't go there just for James Bond Island. MUCH more to it!!)

Of Similans and Surins (and we are snorkelers) I prefer the Surins but we did have 3 days there and only day trip to Similans. I don't think either will disappoint.

As for Khao Sok/Cheow LAN Lake, bear in mind these are two distinctly different areas and experiences and about an hour apart by road. If you are only staying over one night, I would say Khao Sok first day, as it is nearer to KL, and do your tour/exploring there then overnight in tree house or lodge transferring to the Lake for the next day, where you can visit a floating house, then return late afternoon to KL - 2 long but very fulfilling days.

We stayed both in Khao Sok Park and on the lake and would recommend both.

However, if I had to pick one of them I would most definitely vouch for an overnight stay on one of the floating houses on the lake as it was a truly memorable experience.

We booked via Limestone Lake Tours and the service was exceptional. Maybe a bit pricey on certain things, but a truly out of this world experience.

Arandora....??....I don't dare ask what or who a silver surfer would be....??...

Please....!!???....LOL....

RNTRAVEL...While I was in Khao Lak,Matt was in 2 minds.....He owns and runs his surf shop in khao Lak and loves to spread the word of surfing in Khao Lak to promote his business, tho' as a surfer he also said to me that it would be great to keep Khao Lak a little bit of a secret of which I agreed....

However the fact is,I have told my friends here in Sydney of my surfing experience in Khao Lak....And none of them are truly enough interested enough to make the journey....(maybe they're too hard core?)

So,having said that,I would suggest you tell everybody about surfing khao Lak as I know that only a couple will act on it....if any....

Now I rooly do wish you excellent waves in Khao Lak but Feb/Mar is touch and go.....It could be flat as a tack-highly poss...!!

"Arandora....??....I don't dare ask what or who a silver surfer would be....??..."

- You young people, your time will come. LOL

A silver surfer is a "senior", a "wrinklie", someone, like me, whose silver hair indicates their advancing years and who spends a lot of their time, like me, surfing the internet instead of, likeyou, the waves

Has anyone done any of the one day tours to Similan and Surin? Is this enough time?

I day tour to both is fine if that is all the time you have. If you are based in Khao Lak it is nearer to the pier where you catch the speedboat to the islands, about 20 minutes south to Tab Lamu, whereas it is about 75 minutes north to Kuraburi the departure point for the Surins. However, the boats leave the respective piers at about the same time 8.30 am so you just start out earlier from your resort and return there later if you go the Surins. The speedboat trip is about the same at 75 minutes and you have two snorkels from the boat before having lunch on the island.

With the Similans you usually stop off at Sail Rock to enjoy the fabulous beach and crystal water there and climb up to the viewpoint (strapped sandals recommended) for a short while. After lunch you have a further snorkel before heading back to land about 3.30, arriving about 5pm.

The quality, variation and quantity of the marine life is amazing at both islands but personally I enjoyed the deeper reefs and coral at the Surins.

Also there are only a couple of main tour boats going to the Surins whereas there are many more to the Similans and it can get crowded.

You won't be disappointed with either.

I plan to be in Khao Lak for 6 to 8 days, is this enough time to do everything I would like to do (Similan Islands, Surin Islands, Phang Nga Bay, Khao Sok National Park overnight)?
