Replace Phuket or Railay Beach with Khao Lak?

My husband and I are headed to Thailand this December...From reading these forums, I don't want to miss Khao Lak. SO I need to replace one destination in our trip...but which one??

We were going to spend 3 nights in Phuket, 4 nights in Koh Phi Phi, then 3 nights in Railay.(then to Bangkok).

Should we do 3 nights in Khao Lak instead of Phuket? or instead of Railay?

Thank you so much!

Gina Stein

It probably kinda depends on what you like. Railay is GORGEOUS!! Limestone cliffs surround the whole beach.. absolutely love it there myself. But it is more laid back and quieter than Phuket. Personally, I wouldn't want to miss Railay. :)

It depends what your expectations are of Phuket and where you plan on staying. Phi Phi and Railay are all about location, location, location and the stereotypical image portrayed of both. Phuket has its lovely beaches too but a very brash and commercialised part in Patong. Khao Lak is "just" a group of townships either side of the north/south highway with plenty of great restaurants, bars, local, mostly touristy, shops set amid National Parks and with access to over 20km of glorious beaches, Khao Sok National Park in the North and Phang Nga Bay/Krabi or Phuket in the South.

If you omit Phuket, assuming you are arriving there by air, Khao Lak would be just over an hour transfer then a transfer from there either back via Phuket or down to Krabi I guess.

10 days divided among three places is not a long time taking into account transfer times but I would give Phuket a miss in favour of Khao Lak but then again I'm biased. :)

We spent a week in Phuket and a week in Khao Lak this summer. Whilst we enjoyed Phuket, I would have much preferred to have spent the whole two weeks at Khao Lak. We stayed in Kata when we were in Phuket, which is not nearly as busy as some areas like Patong, but we found it far too over commercialised and touristy. Khao Lak was the complete opposite, and was so peaceful and relaxing. I could have stayed forever.

I can see this topic becoming full with every ones personal preferences.

We think Phi Phi is now over crowded and overated, having visited first in 1988 when it was pristine and then on day visits over the past three years, where it is very crowded in the main beach area and full of long tail, speed and tourist boats.4 nights would be too many in our book.

We are now Khao Lak converts and would love to combine a week partying in Phuket and then two weeks relaxing in Khao Lak.

I'm sure we will all have our favourites.

Tanmar,Great minds think alike...!!...

I too, would only go to Koh Phi Phi on a daytrip providing you have never seen it before and would like too..Otherwise,I do not find Koh Phi Phi as interesting as Phuket or Khao Lak...But it is nice(for one day)...

Like Tanmar,we will be spending around 4 days at Kata/Phuket on our next trip and the rest of our holiday(hopefully more than a month)in Khao Lak...

Khao Lak has a special magnetism that is not difficult to explain....Do yourself a favour and experience the magical effects...!!

6. Re: Replace Phuket or Railay Beach with Khao Lak?

Thank you everyone for the input!! I am definately sold on Khao Lak... sounds right up our alley. But I don't want to miss staying on Phi Phi either...SO I think we are going to take out Phuket, (I had booked at Kata Palms Resort on Kata) and cut our phi phi stay by a day.

So we will spend 4 nights in Khao Lak, (in some sort of bungalow I hope), 3 in Phi Phi (Phi Phi Island Cabanas), 3 in Railay Beach (in one of the more secluded homes in Railei beach club)and finally 3 in Bangkok . . . . I know it's a lot for 2 weeks - but my hubby has a bit of ADD if we stay in one place too long ;)

I was thinking Nangthong Bay Resort in Khao Lak...now lets hope I can still get a reservation. (would like to do a day trip to snorkel in Surin or Similan islands)

The Nang Thong Bay Resort is an excellent but very popular resort and books out in the High Seasoon very quickly. If it is fully booked for your dates have a look at this sire (German but with English version) for alternatives both in Bang La On (Nang Thong Beach) and Bang Niang.

You should have no problem booking the Similans or Surins when you arrive.

(PS I was more diplomatic than others who have commented on Phi Phi but I share their views. I hope you won't be disappointed with your stay there.)
