Help with KL day tour itinerary- from MPBC please

Hi, just looking for input into the day tour I'm arranging, starting from Marriott Phuket Beach Club, with 3 & 8 year old in tow.

Depart hotel 9am,

police boat,

tsunami memorial,

is takuapa old town worth a visit?,

elephant trek to Sairung waterfall (how long does it take?),

lunch at Bang Sak beach,

walk along beach,

Sea turtle conservation at Thai Mueang.

Not certain of travel times between things so any input into order appreciated. I dont want to rush but be able to get the maximum out of our time.

Any other suggestions?

thanks Sharyn

Hi Sharyn,

To achieve that itinerary you certainly will be rushing!

Here's an idea of the time involved:

Depart hotel 9am,

police boat, - arrive 10.30am, spend 30 minutes

tsunami memorial, - arrive 11.30am, spend 30 minutes, more if you visit the other nearby Tsunami memorial (The Demon and Blue Angel fishing boats - see www.khaolaklovers.com/forum3/viewtopic.php… for more info.)

is takuapa old town worth a visit?, - as part of this day trip, in my view No.

elephant trek to Sairung waterfall (how long does it take?), - arrive 12.30pm, depart 14.30 to 15.00pm

lunch at Bang Sak beach, - arrive 15.15pm

walk along beach, - depart 16.30pm

Sea turtle conservation at Thai Mueang. - I think will be closed by this time.

If the visit to the Memorial and Sairung are essential and you minise time for lunch/walk on beach, an alternative to take in Turtle Conservation, is to visit the Royal Thai Navy Marine Turtle Conservation Unit on the Naval Base at Tab Lamu. This is nearer to Khao Lak, being only about 15 minutes when you come back over the mountain after leaving Khao Lak (incidentally there is the Asia Elephant and Safari Park just opposite the entrance to the Merlin as you come down the highway from the mountain as an alternative to Sairung _ I predfer Sairung but time is of the essence to you).

Tab lamu is the starting point for trips to the Similan Islands so you cannot miss the turning from the highway as it is a major junction. Follow the signs down from the highway until you reach the entrance (second turning I think) into the Naval Base. There is a barrier and check point and you have to report to the gatehouse and explain that you would like to visit the turtles. You will receive directions or an escort to get you there. It is just down the road near the now public Golf Course (interesting Disney statues playing golf for the kids!) and is a far better hands on, literally, experience than Thai Mueang. There are large tanks with turtles from babies to 1 year old that were brought from the Marine base on the Similans to grow before being taken back and released, thus increasing their chances of survival in the ocean from about 10 to 75%. The Unit is run by an enthusiastic Marine Sergeant whose lack of English is more than compensated for by his passion for the lovely creatures in his temporary care. (Can you have a Mother Hen for a baby turtle - you know what I mean?!) Your kids (and you!) will love being able to handle the tiny and not so tiny reptiles.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Arandora - I was well out!

I didnt realise the elephant trek was so long! And I must have gotten the wrong name of the sea turtle place - I meant the one which is on the way up to Khao Lak from Phuket?

Hmmm, if we take out the tsumani memorial (unfortunately) will that be a more realistic itinerary?

thanks heaps Sharyn

Asia Safari park - is this it? holiday-service-khaolak.com/en/asiasafaripar…

Being an hour tour it might suit our 3 year old (nearly 4!) better?

Are the animals treated Ok does anyone know? We're not going to the Phuket Zoo because of its reputation.

I've printed out the khaolaklovers map - is the boat in the picture sort of across the road from La Flora & Ramada the police boat?

Would our tour work better if we only went as far north as this?

Thanks for the assistance - hopefully I'm nearly there!

cheers Sharyn

Yes

Yes, but bear in mind it is over rougher terrain, in and out of the river, up and down banks, so you'll all have to keep a tight hold. Sairung is along a flat track through a rubber plantation where you dismount to go to the waterfall (nice but not spectacular). If you want it shorter you can negotiate that at the starting point.

Are the animals treated Ok does anyone know? We're not going to the Phuket Zoo because of its reputation.

As far as I am aware, the ellies are treated very well. There have been references to this long established tour with, to my recollection, no adverse comments about animal welfare. If you decide on this trek it offers an alternative also for lunch as there is a lovely restaurant there which overlooks the elephants' quarters and has fabulous views down across Khao Lak Bay towards Phuket.

I've printed out the khaolaklovers map - is the boat in the picture sort of across the road from La Flora & Ramada the police boat?

Yes, it is situated on the right of the highway in Bang Niang before you reach the turn off down the road to the beach where you will find the La Flora and Ramada. It is next door to the Takieng Restaurant.

Would our tour work better if we only went as far north as this?

In terms of time available, undoubtedly. If the Tsunami Memorial is your highest priority, then I think something else would have to suffer.

However, both "Turtle Units" are on the way from Phuket to Khao Lak. The Marine Conservation Unit at Thai Mueang which has turtles as well as fish of all sizes as well as sea anemones of all colours is nearer to your departure point. So you could call there first or the Turtle Unit at Tab Lamu, then your ellie trek at Asia Elephant & Safari Park, or if you want Sairung, continue there. Then depending on the time you finish this activity, have lunch at Bangsak Promenade, walk the beach or leave the beach walk and go up to Ban Nam Khem to the Tsunami Memorial where there is a lovely beach too, then return calling in it at the Police Boat before returning "home". It should still be daylight when you finish this. LOL

Good Luck and Enjoy - then come back to KL for more!!!

Hmmm - thanks for all the info Arandora - think I'll have to let it sit in the old brain for a bit!

It might be worth leaving the tsunami memorial for next time (!) - its deserves quiet contemplation and not rushing.

Didnt know there were 2 turtle places! We're going to the Phuket Aquarium so we'll see fish and anenomes there so the Tap Lamu one would probably be the best this time round - thanks for that.

Thanks very much for your help - you have a very nice way of answering (what are probably to you) daft questions! cheers Sharyn
