Khao Lak in 2008?

Hello everyone!

How is Khao Lak looking this year?

Is it getting busier than ever?

I hope not too busy/hectic?

Are there lots of new restaurants?

New shops? Hotels? Plenty of building sites/building action going on?

As of March this year, Khao Lak has recovered incredibly well from the Tsunami with no visible signs (other than memorials). It is very busy, paricularly December and January but not too much so. Just lots of happy people about in the evening. By day when everyone is at the beach/by the pool, it's pretty quiet. Plenty of new/refurbished everything and more opening all the time but individual places not one big building site.

Thank you for the info.

This sounds really good :)

I think summer months are even more quiet?

But I hope places (restaurants. some shops...) are still open?

The Wet Season or Green Season as it is becoming more familiarly called, is becoming more popular - especially when accommodation is less than half the cost in High season. More and more places are staying open. Certainly the better restaurants remain open all year. Yes, it will rain and some!!! but it will always be warm, hot even, and a fair chance of sun most days.

Whether Khao Lak will become an "all year round" destination remains to be seen - but it is certainly trying!

Khao Lak is a great location all year round, I am there up to three times per year.

May to November is classed as the Green Season. This brings both hot and changeable weather, resulting in sharp thundery downpours which can last a few minutes or a couple of hours. If you are lucky, these downpours will be at night. Hotel prices are very competitive during this period, often showing considerable discounts and special prices for internet bookings. For example, one hotel shows a 60% discount for this period. There are also hotel deals for this period which include activities such as cookery classes, or spa treatments according to the hotel.

You will find some of the restaurants will be closed, particularly those with outdoor dining areas. You will also find that some shops are closed and that the banks operate shorter opening hours. Some ATMs may be out of service as they are replenished less frequently. Nearly all of the beach restaurants will be closed from May to November.
