Have booked the Paradise for next March 09!

Hi All,

We have booked the Paradise for next March for 10 nights and cannot wait to go!

Khao Lak sounds fab, its our 1st time, we usually go to Langkawi in Malaysia but fancied a change, originally we thought about Phuket but on further investigation KL sounded more 'up our street', being quieter but still with lots of local restuarants to dine at. We plan to go Elephant trekking and a trip to the Similans.

Just had to share this information with you.

So I will be an avid member of the forum from now on in.

Jasper.

Welcome to the Forum.

I think you have made a great choice with the Paradise which some regard as one of KL's best kept secrets. We were certainly impressed when we had a good look around the resort last March.

There are several elephant trekking opportuities, the Asia Safari & Elephant Village at the entrance to Khao Lak opposite the Merlin, the new Elephant Trekking Centre at Khuk Khak and the best one IMHO a few miles north of Khao Lak at the Saurung Waterfall (see pics at http://photos.orange.co.uk/album/7782881 )

and many tour agencies to book trips to the Similans (and other tours), for instance, Khao Lak Land Discovery - see www.khaolaklanddiscovery.com/bookings.php

Hi Jasper,

You will have a fantastic time at the Paradise resort. I am sure you will love Khao Lak . I prefer KL to Phuket as that is very touristy and over commercialised. Kl has some beautifull beaches, great local restaurants and there is so much you can do in the area. You will love the elephant treks in the area and there is also the Surin islands as well as Similan. If you wanted to see what Phuket was like you could still do that as a day trip.

Julie

Thanks Arandora and Julie,

The elephant trekking photos look great, I think we will also hire a car and take a wander around the area, maybe take a look at Phuket. In your opinion is it safe to hire scooter/motorbike in KL and just go and wander off?

My husband will drive with me on the back. You would think I was going next week!! I need to calm down Ive got 8 months to go yet.

Have just go back from Sharm el Sheik, the snorkelling was great but the food was dreadful. I love Thai food, the food in Langkawi was fantastic just hope the food in KL is as good.

J.

Hire a scooter/bike? - for me, absolutely no way. Since you are uninsured you take your life and others in your hands. Many/most do it and get away with it. I personally would not risk it. They are all over the place, literally. They come at you on the wrong side of the road, sometimes at night -wihout lights!

I prefer a hire car and the protection it affords. We use Airport Car Rent, pick up at Phuket Airport on arrival, drop off on return, although we have used Budget, Hertz and Avis. If you do hire a car, ensure it has First Class (Comprehensive) Insurance and that you take an International Drivers Permit with you, obtainable on-line in UK from the AA or at major post offices listed on that site.

Have a look at this thread for some useful advice/tips about driving in Thailand:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293920-i5037-k210…

In Thailand when there is an accident the attitude towards farang drivers is said to be "It's your fault as it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't been there!"

Nonetheless driving in and around Khao Lak is a pleasure so long as you stay alert. It affords you greater flexibilty and when and where to go and access to places off the normal tourist track.
