Khao Lak accommodation options late December

We are a family of 4. Our 2 children (both boys) are aged 14 and 10. We arrive in Bangkok on December 14 for 3 nights. We then head to Chiang Mai for 5 days. After that we're not sure what to do but we will end up in Khao Sok National Park before wanting to spend time on a beach or island for a few weeks from late December. We like the look of Khao Lak but can't find the accommodation we want on the internet. Prices seem to double around this period as well. We have a budget of around 5000 baht per night. We just want a simple, comfortable wooden bungalow but one that is big enough to fit 4 people and has a nice garden. Doensn't have to be right on the beach or have a pool though internet connection would be nice because we're self-employed and will need to keep a digital eye on things. Doesn't have to be right in town but close to local restaurants would be good. Can anyone suggest a beach/island/hotel??? Thanks in advance. Simeon, Trina, Juel and Taj.

Even at peak period in December 5000 baht should get you the accommodation you describe in Khao Lak. For instance, We stayed for 8 weeks in the Cousin Bungalow Resort in Bang Niang, the second largest area in Khao Lak in terms of accommodation, restaurants, bars and shops. We are returning for 12 next January so we are biased.

It's website is at http://www.cousinresort.com/ and you can book direct or through http://www.khaolak.de/khaolakbeach/home.htm a German website but bookings and replies in English. There are other bungalow resorts listed on the site by area too.

The Cousin has a pool, restaurant and lovely gardens and is 5 minutes back from the beach. It is having free wireless internet installed in all its bungalows. Most bungalows are for 2, will sleep more but there are a couple of family bungalows with two bedrooms which would suit you better, I think.

From Bang Niang you are just over an hour to Khao Sok National Park to the North and Phuket Airport to the South.
