New Kempinski Hotel being built location help

Hello, New Kempinski Hotel

I am looking at booking this hotel for my trip in February as bookings are being taken from January 2009. I beleive it is sited at khuk kak beach. Does anybody know will it be isolated or within walking distance of any restaurants. I usually stay at the Le Meridien where you have access to other places but this time i fancy a change. I have been quoted £28 for half board and might consider this if there are no other options. I have never been to the area where this hotel will be placed.

Thankyou

Julie

The Kempinski, formerly the Sofitel Magic Lagoon, is set to be Khao Lak's first 6* resort. When we visited its location last March, only the approach road and footings were visible.

Have a look at this link from a German Forum which gives you upto date information and photos, albeit much in German the pics speak for themselves:

This is going to be a LARGE resort with the first phase scheduled for completion at the end of this year. Bookings being taken now are probably for a "soft opening" hence the incredibly low price.

Although Khuk Khak Beach is beautiful and wild, there are no local restaurants on it nor any within walking distance of the Kempinski. The nearest resorts are the Khao Lak Orchid Beach, the new Andamania Resort (which this year has been operating on low introductory rates due it not being fully complete) and then the group of new resorts on Pakarang Beach.

This is set to be Khao Lak's "Diamond Coast" but, personally, I don't think 2009 will herald that status.

Thanks Alan,

You are a great help. I thought the rates represented a soft opening so its worth trying the hotel and they also promise a room upgrade to a pool access. When they start charging the going rate i probably will not be able to afford it then. So February 2009 here i come.

Cheers Julie

You are right Julie! When it is fully complete the "Jewel in Khao Lak's Crown" will probably be £280 a night!! After all, it's not everyone who gets to stay in a hotel owned by the King of Thailand! (Kempinski Group major shareholder).

The Kempinski is going to be such a large resort that you can expect that little restaurants will open up on the beachfront near the resort.

Whether they will have arrived by February, I don't know - but don't be surprised to find a few little places there by then.

Hi

Thankyou Ted and Jason i have decided to go half board allthough it is not really the done thing in Thailand but expecting the food to be fabulous. It would be nice if a restaurant like the rim lay springs up on the beach as i just love those kind of places. Just got to sort out my hotel in Krabi now before my trip is finalised.

Julie,

At £28 a night including dinner you can afford a few nights out!!!! LOL

Actually it may not be that far walking up the beach to Cape Pakarang where a few beach restaurants have sprung up outside the new Asparas Beach, the South Sea Grand and Toklaburi Resorts and the existing Best Western Palm Galleria, all of which will have restaurants. There is, I think, a pizzeria there also. You can also walk down the beach to the Orchid Beach Resort, whose restaurant I understand is very good.

Just behind and inland from the Kempinski is a small new bungalow resort (only two bungalows plus the German owner) which has a delightful little café selling coffee and cake (and Thai meals "soon" the owner said last March) which overlooks Khao Lak Lake (I didn't know there was one until we came upon this when riding round the area) Over the other side of the lake is the monastery at Khuk Khak through which you come out on the highway mid-way between Khuk Khak village and Le Meridien.

Arandora is probably right - I think it is probably just a short walk up the beach to the area around the Asparas Resort and restaurants in that area. It is a longer drive, but via the beach should be a short distance.

We're looking to be in Khao Lak in Feb too, and agree this will be a wonderful opportunity. Where do you get the info and do the booking? Thanks.

Arandora or Khao Lak specialists - We stayed at Sofitel Magic Lagoon in July before the tsunami.

Wonderful location and beach.

At that time there was a Mum and Pop food stall on the beach, just to the left of the hotel as you look at the beach, and we often wondered whether they survived.

Hopefully they were having a late start that day - but we have often wondered.

Anyone know?
