With all this talk of Thai wine, a separate topic is called for!

Any recommendations will be gratefully received in readiness for our trip, thanks.

There are vineyards in the Hua Hin area, though that would be too far from Khao Lak.

The wines are certainly getting better.

I look forward to the results of your wine tastings in due course. If you have a hire car and get down to Phuket, Tesco Lotus and the Big C had an excellent selection. Unfortunately it was the time of day when alcohol couldn't be sold when we visited so couldn't buy any.:(

Seriously folks, we are just about to head off for our umpteenth trip to Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and would love to find a nice crisp white wine to break the monotony of the usual beer and cocktail diet (can't bring ourselves to pay the outrageous prices which the customs duties and other add ons dictate for imported wine). Any suggestions?

I've been up in the vineyards of Loei, in the extreme northeast of the country neighbouring on Laos. They're growing more than half decent wine on the high plateau of Phu Reua - Chateau de Loei. Unfortunately, very little seems to make it to the rest of Thailand. I never saw it for sale anywhere. Maybe they ship it to China, which I hear is a developing wine market. I had a bottle of real nice Chenin Blanc. If you can find it, it's worth trying. http://tinyurl.com/3n6nxp

Loei wine is a nice wine and is sold in markets and resturants all over Thailand. My wife enjoys it. By the way, she is from Loei.
