Khao Lak V Krabi - which one?

We are planning a trip to Thailand end Nov early Dec and have decided that we will visit either Khao Lak or Krabi, problem is which one. Traveling will be me and my husband and two daughters 19 and 22, we all like some nightlife, eating out at local restaurants, the beach, snorkeling and would like to give other water activities a go, relaxing around the pool - ( but we are not very good a sitting around for the whole day), hubby is a keen photograph so likes to go and take photos, we like to do a few tourist things, and of course shop -although we are stopping in Bangkok for a few nights. I am concerned that Khao Lak may be a little quiet for the girls. Any ideas would be very welcome as I just can't decide.

Khao Lak has emerged from the dreadful events of the Tsunami as a more family oriented destination with a wide range of accommodation from small bungalows to 5* resorts; miles of coastline with beautiful beaches, some more remote than others; it is part of a National Park in an area of oustanding natutal beauty with access to others, notably Khao Sok National Park an hour or so to the north and the incredible Similan and Surin islands, two of the best dive and snorkelling sites in the world.

There are several elephant trekking sites nearby and the delightful small island of Koh Kho Khao is only a thirty minute ride and ferry crossing away.

The main area for restaurants, shops and bars is Baan La on with Bang Niang, quieter but rapidly developing a few kilometres north along the highway.

Have a look at the maps and information in the following link and post back for more information on anything that takes your fancy.

Many thanks for the inforamtion - our travel agent has suggested staying at Khao Lak Merlin Resort Hotel - is there much to do around there (particularly at night) there seems to be plenty duringthe day and which area of Khoa Lak would it be in, my main concern is having bored daughters!

The Merlin is situated on Khao Lak South Beach or Khao Lak Beach, which is the first beach and resorts you reach coming from Phuket and before you go over the mountain to the next beach, Khao Lak Sunset Beach and then down to the main area of Baan La On with Nang Thong Beach.

KL Beach is a lovely beach in an enclosed bay with just the established Merlin, a big resort possibly in need of renovation to remain competitive with the recently rebuilt Emerald and Briza resorts adjacent to it. There are only a few, but good, restaurants and bars within walking distance. Baan la On is about 10 minutes away by taxi.

One of the elephant trekking sites, the Asia Safari and Elephant Village is just across the highway from the Merlin.

Hi,

Took my daughters ages 17 and 13 to both Krabi and Khao Lak in March. We just loved Krabi..quite laid back but there are lots of great restaurants and small bars there as well as some shopping (not like Bangkok though). However, my daughters found some shops there with handmade clothing and they loved that. We loved the beach, not much surf and the water's warm. There are quite a few longtail boats that pull up near one end of the beach but no problem. We personally enjoyed Khao Lak but it was very quiet when we were there. Saw only one or two teens other than mine. It's a great spot to get tours from to the Similan Islands and or Khao Sok National Park- we did both. Also went to a small town to the local market which was neat. The beach was pretty much deserted where we were but we enjoyed walks / runs there. Really enjoyed Bangkok as well, not so big on the Phuket area. Our favorite spot over all- Krabi was the winner. Thailand is wonderful, great culture, people, loved it. Have a great trip...
