Not enough information given in the question really.

>>Looking at Khao lake <<

Khao Lak compared to where?

Depends on your expectations. Khao Lak is a very quiet area made up of 25kms of coast line.

Nothing like the concentrated party zones in Bali or Phuket is available.

>>which is the best beach to stay on <<

again depends;

How far out of the main townships do you want to be?

Many of what people consider to be the "best" beaches are far out of the townships and require transport to reach shopping and markets. Only a few restaurants local to them.

Do you want to sunbake, swim, snorkel on said beaches?

What time of year?

In the months from May till November many of Khao Laks beaches suffer badly from erosion due to the strong waves and currents, so are not much good.

>>are there plenty of bars, restaurants and shopping in said area<<

The main shopping, a small strip in Bang La On and a little more in nearby Bang Niang.

There are markets on a couple of nights a week in both. Sell most of the usual.

Supermarkets and Banks, Pharmacies and A Macca's in Bang La On.

Plenty of restaurants during high season but many close in the quieter months from June till October.

What sort of bars are you looking for? No all-nighters like in Bali or Phuket in Khao Lak.

May be if you are after a nice quiet relaxing holiday with good food at nice friendly quiet resaurants then Khao Lak is worth the cost of the drive up from Phuket

There is some very good information in the FAQ's on the right hand side of this page.

If you have just seen a cheap deal that happens to be in Khao Lak, do more research to see if it fits what you want as a destination.

The main areas with restaurants and bars are Bang Niang and Bang La On. The beaches are fine but not the best in Khao Lak. The best beaches tend to be a bit more out of the way with a few restaurants around but not a lot else.

Shopping in Khao Lak is very low key. There are a few boutique type shops and mainly market type shops with one main market in Bang Niamg. There aren’t shopping malls or anything like it there.

Like the poster above said, check it out to see if it is what you are looking for. We love it but if you are looking for heaps of shopping and nightlife then you might be disappointed.
