Thank you re the cost of a taxi :)
You need to get to the main highway that runs through to get a bus to Phuket Town.
They stop at bus stops and some can be hailed to stop elsewhere. Ask your Hotel for info. The best one to take is very early around 7.30-8.30 depending where you are located, (KhaoLak as an area is a huge stretch of 25kms.) north or south.
If you are in a hurry take a private Taxi, about 1-1half hours.
contact Boss @ Cheaper than Hotel Taxi, most reputable, check reviews.
The bus can take anywhere between 2-3 hours depending on driver, weather and stops.
Cost is around 100thb per person and they drop you in Phuket Town at the bus depot.
From there you can get a local tuk tuk to the bus stops that service the local Phuket buses to get to Patong.
(Make sure you are firm with these drivers of tuk tuk as they will try to take you to stores where they get kickbacks)
A great place to shop in Phuket Town are the markets close to the main bus station. Huge indoor area of stalls selling all manner of goods electrical to handbags. Also Robinsons. ( Make sure you take a copy of your passport for ID to change currency too.)
Walk in the direction of the Royal Hotel and then its just down the side street a 10 min walk. Ask a local if you are unsure.
Be sure to return to the main bus station well before the bus is due to leave for your return to Khao Lak. We usually get the one around 15.00-15.30 and then you are back before dark.

Thanks famwood thats really helpful :)
I know about cheaper than Hotel Taxis. He is picking us up at the airport at a good price
We may use him for this trip too as don't have a spare 3 hours to get a bus :) He has quoted about £70 round trip. Might be worth it to save the time
Anyone know if Old Town Phuket has much to do at night time in the week as can't make it on the Sunday market unfortunately :(
