Some photos and info about the Galleria (very nice resort) are here:

http://khaolaklovers.com/photos.html

and here:

http://khaolaklovers.com/update2.html

towards the bottom of the page is some info about a few restaurants in the area.

Personally - I think it is a GREAT area. Walk to the north and around the point of Cape Pakarang in the mornings. You'll have the beach to yourself and probably find lots of great shells and other stuff swept up on the beach overnight.

This map at Khao Lak Lovers has the Palm Galleria on it.:

http://khaolaklovers.com/map3.html

PG is quite in the middle of the map - just below the script "Leam Pakarang"

Getting in to town will take about 10-12 minutes.

That should get you started.

Hi. We're off to the Palm Galleria later today! Our first time to Thailand. Couple of links here for orientatation.

http://www.khaolak-hotels.com/map/index.htm

hoteltravel.com/thailand/…khaolak_map.htm

asiatours.net/thailand/…LAK_large-map_en.html

The last one doesn't show the Palm Galleria, but using the other two you can work out where you are and what is around and about.

I will write a review when we get back!

Mark.

There is only one town, Bang La On, which is off Nang Thong Beach and which is more commonly referred to as Khao Lak Town. Bang Niang and Bang Niang Beach are a bit furether North along Highway 4 from Bang La On.

Thanks for the info,

we are staying at Palm Galleria so Bnag Niang beach is not too far in comparison to Nang Thong.

So just to confirm!!! the mian place for us to go into town in the evening is Namng Thong Beach? is this busier than Bang Niang Beach???

Whilst there are bars on the beach at Nang Thong, the main nightlife - restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets - are on the main Highway about a kilometre from the beach. If you are going by taxi just ask for Khao Lak or ask to be dropped off at the Ska Bar in Khao Lak which is convenient for most places.

As you arrive you will drive through here on your way to the PG so you will get an idea of how long it takes.

Having hired a car for a few days last year, we are hiring one for the full 21 days we are in KL in just less than two weeks time. I'd certainly consider one for a couple of days as there some great "off the beaten track" trips you can take, for instance the Hot Springs Loop which takes you to some fabulous completely deserted beaches. I was going to say the Cape Pakarang loop, but that's where you are staying so you can walk it!

There are plenty of tour operators in KL to arrange snorkeling to the Similans, a day out (or more if you want) up in the wonderful Khao Sok National Park. We are taking the John Gray Hongs by Starlight Tour from Phuket. We are driving there but they will pick you up and deliver you back for 1500baht. These are islands in Phang Nga Bay, the most "famous" being James Bond Island (the one in the film The Man with the Golden Gun - remember "The plane, the plane!") There is closer to home the Asian Elephant and Safari Park, just outside of KL on the way back to Phuket where you can have an elephant trek.

Loads of info on http://khaolaklovers.com/ (where you can join the Forum and get more info)

and http://www.mykhaolak.de/index.html where you can join the Forum and get more info - if you speak German! LOL

Restaurants in KL? We never had a bad meal last year and there are more restaurants and bars there now. Jai's was excellent, as was the Dive In and The Viking - especially if you want a steak or pizza. The Phu Khao Lak was our favourite but has been completely rebuilt. Less authentic Thai in terms of the new building but no less authentic, I understand in terms of quality and variety of food.

One restaurant which is consistently highly recommended and which is nearer to you at Bang Niang is the Takieng Restaurant. Very popular, not very big, so reservation recommended. It is next to the Police Boat on Highway 4 (this boat was was left in its current position by the dreadful Tsunami and is a stark reminder of the awesome power of Mother Nature!)

Hope this wets your appetite even more - and talking of which, the best bar in my view with great live music and fabulous range of cocktails is the Happy Snapper. That's in KL Town on the right as you walk back towards your place.

Have a great time. We will!

Alan
