Warning about swimming on Khao Lak beach and beach erosion

"Hotels and resorts on the popular Khao Lak beach in Phang Nga raised red flags on the beach on Wednesday morning to warn tourists against swimming in the sea.

Sayan Kijmano, chief of Phang Nga’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said the warning was issued in response to a forecast of strong winds and a rough sea by the Meteorological Department. The department warned that the southwest monsoon over the Andaman is gaining strength, resulting in giant waves.

Sayan also warned local administrations in the southern province to get prepared for torrential rains, flash flooding and mudslides on Wednesday."

Not certain which of Khao Lak's beaches it means or is shown but the warning is relevant to all.

Concern about further erosion of Bang Niang Beach. No decision on action to be taken yet.

There was a story in the UK press a week or so ago about a beach in Ireland that had reappeared overnight after being washed away 40 years ago. Hundreds of tonnes of sand, overnight. It's amazing what the sea can do.

I am at Nang Thong 2 at the moment, they seem to have lost 2 metres of their beach frontage, maybe more, maybe less, in a storm about 2 weeks ago and another the night we arrived. The pounding of the waves was enormous, so loud and the wind was like a cyclone. Weathers been pretty much beautiful ever since mind you. Lots of hotel staff now on the beach filling and laying down sand bags, for the next onslaught I guess.
