Really need help planning an itinerary!!

My boyfriend and I are planning to head to Lombok in mid Nov, for 7 days. We really want to do a 2d1n Rinjani trek, and maybe a few days at one of the Gili islands?

I'm just having abit of trouble trying to figure out an itinerary!

- Should we be aiming to do the trek right at the beginning/middle or end of the 7 days?

- Will we even be able to trek rinjani in mid Nov as I've read that it is at the beginning of the wet season

- Do we actually need to stay at one of the Gilli islands or should we just make it a day trip?

Really needing some help, I have been scouring the internet for days!

Thanks in advance!

You might have rain, and it can get cold when you're wet, but generally you can still trek in November. The 2 day is just to the crater, not the summit. Plenty of trekkers head to the gilis after a trek for some R&R, so maybe planfor that.

Read the Rinjani link on this forum top questions and contact a couple of the recommended trek cos for details of transfers and up to date prices as that post is getting a bit old.

whether you stay on Lombok or a small island off the c oast depends on what you want to do on holidays. The gilis have no real cultural offerings, its beach and bar. Lombok offers much more and of course you can day tripto many gilis

Yes, a trekking to Mount Rinjani is a must if you can make it. It's once in a life time experience to crater rim and to the summit.

- Should we be aiming to do the trek right at the beginning/middle or end of the 7 days?

It's better to be at the end of the 7 days. Mount Rinjani is quite a tough mountain and needs quite a bit of of fitness to get through. We couldn't walk properly for te next few days after hiking.

- Will we even be able to trek rinjani in mid Nov as I've read that it is at the beginning of the wet season

We hiked Rinjani in November last year. Mount Rinjani is usually closed from Dec/Jan to Apr due to bad weather. We did the 2D1N summit hiking package with Rudy Trekker. We started at 9am and reached crater rim at 6pm to catch the sunset. We spent a night at crater rim 2649m and woke up at 1:30am the next morning and continue our journey to the summit 3726m.

- Do we actually need to stay at one of the Gilli islands or should we just make it a day trip?

If I were you, I would make it a day trip as I don't like to move around.

Read my blog about Mount Rinjani here - …blogspot.sg/2013/11/lombok-untouched-balli.…

Thanks so much Iva and Sudiah!

We are also very keen to do some diving/snorkelling.. is this best to do around Lombok or one of the Gilis?

Hessienoogen, the word "gili" means small island, Lombok has hundreds of small islands that surround it. 3 well known small islands off the north west coast are referred to as "The gilis". But in reality, all the gilis around Lombok ARE Lombok. Whether you stay on a small island off the coast of Lombok, or on the main island of Lombok, depends on what you want to do.

There are not really any shore dives from the 3 northern gilis, but you can snorkel. The coral is "ok" - the main attraction is the turtles. This can also be done with a day trip. Better diving is to be had around the south-west gilis. Don't expect anything as good as Ningaloo, but it is still quite decent diving.

So, the question of where to stay really depends on what else you want to do with your time. There is nothing wrong with staying on one of the 3 northern gilis, but expect the water to be crowded with inexperienced divers. The islands are very laid back, and quite pleasant to stay on. The alternative would be to stay around the Senggigi area where you can base yourself for diving in different locations, and also do some cultural sight seeing.
