Luggage on trains

Hi all, we have booked a few trains whilst travelling around India. Our first train is the Gattimaan express Delhi to Agra, then the Kota express from Agra to Sawai Madhopur and finally the dayodai express from Sawai Madhopur to Jaipur. My wife has seen a few vlogs on India travel and is now worried regarding our luggage on the trains. Did I need to buy a seat for our cases? Is there storage on the train? Is it safe to leave our luggage unattended on the above journeys? We will be travelling with 2 small/medium cases and 1 hand luggage maximum. I never even considered our luggage, so a bit of an oversight on my part. Your advice is appreciated.

Many thanks

Rich

Your bags should fit under the seat. Or above, if you are travelling sleeper class in the daytime. Some people recommend attaching them with a padlock. There is no reason to leave them unattended.

You don't need to buy an extra seat for luggage, just keep it below the seat and attach a lock to it if you ware travelling in sleeper class, in AC class your bags are mostly safe and just you need to keep a check on them.

yes your luggage will easily fit under the seat - so no issues.

Thumb rule is one person can easily fit a medium sized baggage and one small baggage under his seat , at times if the train is not running to full capacity (which is rare) you can get away with 2 medium sized baggage for one seat .

Its not recommended for you to purchase an extra seat for extra luggage as you would end up denying someone in need with a train ticket.

---------------------------------

For anyone else who may be interested in knowing how to travel with big or extra luggage

--------------

Lets say you have couple of extremely large suitcase or baggage, all you have to do is book your extra luggage as luggage in the same train. Its not quite expensive but in such a case you need to arrive at the station earlier and should ensure that the luggage is properly packed . once at the station show your ticket and get the luggage booked , once done pay a token fee to the porter and ensure that your luggage is put in the brake van of the same train.

At your destination station go to the brake van and ensure your luggage is taken out, but remember you need to go to booking office to take delivery of the luggage.

Using padlock and chain is another method to secure it.

Dear Richard

You don't have to buy seperate seat for luggage nor i guess is allowed to book a seperate seat only for luggage.

1. In gatimaan express there is enough space for storage overhead like in airplanes. You can easily place your luggage on overhead shelf no need to chain bags if placed overhead just have an eye on them.

2. In other trains like sleeper coached (both AC and non AC) there is a space for luggage under your berths. Enough space for 3-5 big bags. Chain them when you place below seats.

Happy journey
