This page will list all the trains-- numbers, days of operation, depart times, and arrival times -- from Sawai Madhopur to Delhi: http://www.trainenquiry.com/TrainsBetw2St_Display.aspx?station1=SWM+&station2=NDLS&queryDisplay1=SAWAI+MADHOPUR%2c+SWM+&queryDisplay2=NEW+DELHI%2c+NDLS

Now, about what class to take. Not all of these trains will have all classes, so I can only speak generally; for more specific information about each train and its class, you will need to look up the Indian Government railways site, which is http://www.indianrail.gov.in/ (hit "Trains between Stations" and then "all classes"). The classes for each train will be listed. If you don't know what the classes actually provide you with, there are photographs on the Indian section of www.seat61.com.

As a general rule, if you're looking for comfort, then Unreserved Second Class is definitely not for you. I don't think you'd be happy with Sleeper Class, either.

If it's a day train and offers "Coach Class", then these are sit-up seats like the configuration on aircraft, where you sit in pairs with the aisle down the middle. These are the most "regular" seats for European or American passengers.

If it's an overnight train, probably they will not offer coach class, and you'll need to choose either 1AC (First Class Air Conditioned), 2AC, or 3AC. These are compartment carriages, with 1AC having two beds, 2AC four beds (two layers of two), and 3AC six beds (three layers of two). Obviously that third layer means there's less space to play around with, and the middle-layer seats are the least convenient; for one thing, if you want to go to bed, you have to tell everyone on your side of the compartment to go to bed, too, since if they're all sitting on the bottom "bed", you can't unfold yours. The top beds are always ready for use in all three classes, the bottom ones are for daytime sitting.

In 2AC and 3AC there are also side seats ( running lengthwise along the "other side" window) and there are always two layers only of these, so both are always ready for use. These are probably the best ones to choose (unless you're very tall... they're a little shorter than the main compartment beds), but, of course, there are only a few of these.

Alan concerning the side berths, they are only a little shorter, the problem is the partition wall at both ends of your bed make it an uncomfotable option if you are tall.

Also the bottom side bunk is designated as two sitting berths from 9pm to 7am, so the passenger occupying the top bunk is entitled to ask you to fold up your bed between 9 & 7....

Thanks for that clarification, Cyberhippie; there was one more "missing bit" in what I wrote, so maybe you could fill me (and everybody else) in on this one: not being a First Class traveller, I couldn't mention the side berths (SL and SU) in 1AC; I wasn't sure whether these even existed in this exalted class, and suspected that they didn't. So, please enlighten me: what do they have is 1AC where the side berths are in the other two classes?

Slightly roomier "cabins" instead of curtained compartment and a connecting corridor, no side berths.

You'll find the schematics on my website
