I will be residing in Pune for a year. I am American and I am wondering if English is spoke frequently there?

Yes, English is quite widely spoken in Pune. You may have problems interacting with say taxi drivers, maids, small shopkeepers etc but otherwise you shouldn't have too many problems. Lots of foreigners visit Pune, so don't worry too much about the language...

English is well spoken language. As said by another replier, some people cant communicate in English. However there are many English words that are commonly used in local language. It will be also worth while to learn a few local language - Marathi and Hindi words for common things

english is the main language of india and is spoken all over

but depending how you handle english ie not american...lol

would you be ok in Scotland for example?

I definitely have a southern accent. I went to Ireland several years ago and was able to communicate fine while at the pubs! This will be a new adventure!

lol... just smile, its international.... my point was that the indians main language is english... not american english... nor english english... but indian english

but they are a very inteligent people as i'm sure you already know... so my advice is... remember that it you that is foreign and talk slowly... most people will understand you... i have a scottish accent and get along just fine...

many road signs and shop signs are in English. If you go to malls and large shops, they can speak excellent English.. so no worries !!

You have to take special care while speaking English on phone as there could be accent issues. Otherwise we do catch your English pretty well.

You also have to do your homework regarding the basics of "How to.." and "How much.." as like anywhere else in the world foreign tourists are easy targets to earn extra bucks.

You may not have problem with the language since most of the people know english.Marathi is the language prominently spoken here.

However if you are staying for longer period then it is advisable to learn quick phrases to communicate or understand local people.
