Munnar and Thekkady

Want to be in Cochin for New Year as it looks likely to be livelier than other towns around and we're looking for that.

On the other hand - we are travelling from Goa down to Cochin (probably by plane now as we can't get a flight) on the 27th December.

This may seem going backwards but want to see Munnar and Thekkady - would this work...

Fly into Cochin and stay the night or leave straight away and go to Munnar.

From there 1 night or no nights! and then 1 or 2 nights in Thakkady. Back to Cochin for New Year and then on the 1st down to Alleppey for houseboat.

Or is there another way of doing this.

Dear Flyby 21,

We decided to go to Thekkady. We are going to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, but from what we hear we won't see much. We choose this also because of the tea and spice plantations and the massage theropy. We went with Eco tours and will stay at the Cardamom Club. This was a recomendation of a friend. It is deep in the jungle and very quite. I think it is a good place to see another side of India . Good luck

Flyby,

Most people opt to leave for Munnar from Kochi very early in the morning. Two reasons for this - folks wish to reach by check-in time. Mists could come down in the evening in Munnar, making driving difficult. The road winds and twists quite a bit. Your sightseeing is also limited by the mist if it decides to come down early - although walks in the mist are quite delightful. I would recommend a night or two in Munnar to get the full benefit of it. In fact, I would personally stay at least three or four nights - at a quiet place.

Do take this into account when planning and booking flights.

Have a great trip.

How long would it take to drive from Cochin to Thakkady - would this road be via Munnar or is there another direct route.

Thinking of spending 2 nights only in Thakkady only.

What is better Munnar or Thekkady if I had to choose.

Hi Flyby21,

It takes about 5 hours to drive down from Thekkady to Cochin. This road is not via Munnar.

For that matter, Munnar is not a place where you just visit for an hour or so. If you are unable to make it to atleast a night (if possible two), please drop Munnar from your list. Anything less is not justifying to the amount of travel involved.

Personal favorite is Munnar - any time.

Cochin to Thekkady is 5 hours in a taxi through direct road and not through Munner.beside the jungle and the plantation in Thekkady there are thousands of pigrims passing through Kumily every day and it is very special to witness this especially around the temple in the evenings.last thing you had better makeup your mind quickly as all the accommodation is filling up and it will be full in both Thekkady and Munner.

have a great holiday.
