Depends on whether you want to experience train journey on the Konkan coast or get there fast.

Flights will usually route you through Bangalore and will take 4-6 hours (unless there is a long layover). Costs about Rs.6000 to Rs.7500.

Train will take longer but a different experience (and views). Pick a quicker train with lesser stops - that will take about 12-13 hours (Madgaon to Eranakulam jn). Something like Rajdhani or Duronto is faster than the others and only a few stops. Will cost you about Rs. 3000 if you choose First A/C, about Rs. 1600 if you choose 2-tier A/c (shared compartment with 4 berths). But book well in advance as trains tend to get sold out quickly.

Hi Sandra,

You should book your tickets ASAP if you have decided your dates. As you know India is a populated country and traveling by Indian trains is cheap here. Everyone wants to travel by train here. So in high demand trains, overnight journeys and long-distance journeys, advance booking is a must thing here in India. Booking opens 120 day in advance.

Please feel free to ask for any help, question or suggestion.

Raj,

Goa to Kerala along the Konkan coast and through the western ghats is a very scenic route and is one of the best train journeys.

Flying is not a good option as there are no direct flights from Goa to Kerala.

Hi,

thank you for your post and helpful replies. I am thinking of a similar trip, however from Kerala to Goa. What is the best train company and route to take. I'd like to leave a central (four tourists) spot in Kerala and get the train to the closest spot to Palolem beach in Goa.

I'd really appreciate any feedback along with appropriate links.

thanks in advance!

Milly

Indian Railways of Govt of India runs all trains. You can visit erail.in for quick information on timings and days on which the trains run. For ticket booking you need to go to irctc.co.in

Trains run from Ernakulam railway station (twin city of Kochi/Cochin). Thiruvananthapuram / Kochuveli is another major station (closer to Kovalam/Varkala beach).

Depending on the trains you may reach Madgaon (40km) or Karmali (66km) railway stations from where you may have to take a cab to Palolem. Madgaon is easier and closer to find connecting transport.

There are plenty of trains daily from Goa to Cochin and vicevers.

Rajadani Express runners 3 days in a week is the fastest .( 12.40 Madgaon Junction - 00.55 am Ernakulam Junction

Mangalam Express runs daily over night ( 19.40 Madgaon Junction - 10.55 Ernakulam Junction)

Natravathi express runs daily
