We did the Taj trip on our own in Dec06. I would recommend booking a train ticket as all seats are numbered you dont really want to travel 2nd class. Its also very cheap (for 4 of us return was about £10 each) and its really easy. You can even pay by visa and print the tickets off the internet. www.indianrail.gov.in

We stayed at the Qutab hotel which is about half way between the airport and Nizamuddin Train station about £80 for 2 B&B. Booked thru hotels.com (I think!)

We also stayed at the Taj View with Taj view room but you must book early! Well worth it for a once in a lifetime!

Any other info please ask!

hi Thestonk23,

We went to the Taj on an organised tour, we travelled from Varanasi, and arrived at 0500 to watch the sun rise, and the taj unfolding slowly as the light came through, absolutely wonderful, a memory forever. Also if you can go to Jaipur to the Observatory and see the star signs, awesome.

We sat on dianas stool and it is just like you see in the books ,beautiful.

I am sorry but I cannot remember the name of the hotel. We travelled there in a sleeper train overnight a really good experience, fed and watered all the way.

Seeing the culture on the train was amazing and will always make me think of India.

Have a good time.

You should be aware that there are several train stations in delhi where you can take trains to Agra. Most people who do Agra as a day trip take the shatabdi express which leaves from N. Delhi station at 06:15 and leaves Agra at 20.30 . The train trip takes 2 hours each way and costs 840 rupees return, including breakfast on the way to Agra and dinner on the way back.

The other train option is the Taj express which runs from the Nizzamuddin station in the south of Delhi. These trains allow you enough time to see the taj mahal and the red fort in Agra with a trip to Fatapur Sikri as an option if you wish.

You can do it yourself by booking on the internet or there are loads of tour companies who offer hotel pick ups and drop offs in Delhi, train tickets plus the use of a car and guide in Agra for the day. We paid $85 a head for this trip in January 2008.
