Tipping In Dubai - Hotels, Taxis, Restaurants

Hi, I'm sure similar questions have been asked before but...

I plan to use Careem taxi app to get around, as I understand it, that is paid by card on the app, so do I give a cash tip and how much?

And in the hotels for the daily room service, do I leave a tip and how much?

And restaurants, how much is acceptable to give as tip? I assume it's like we have in the UK if you pay by card, you have the option to give a tip separately.

And do we tip the events people? i.e. the 4x4 desert activity for example?

Just I went on one holiday and I gave away so much on tips, I got back and thought woah need to watch out next time.

Cheers guys.

Bottom line - tip what you think it right and can afford.

If you have cash, it always is preferable rather than adding it onto a bill (as the wait/serving staff may not receive it).

For taxis, and this is just me, but for every 15 mins I'm in a cab I'd add 5 dirhams as a tip (providing all is well with the journey).

For hotels, I'd go 5-10 dirhams a day in the room for cleaner/housekeeping and 5 each touchpoint where someone helps you and you feel appropriate (e.g. a bellhop).

However, it's all what you see fit - don't worry too much about convention. It's not like some American states where you will get bawled at or pleaded at if you don't tip. Remember, most hospitality venues add some service charges .

Thank you Shaun, always very helpful.

With restaurants, say would a 10 AED be a good amount to tip?

Bear in mind that a 10 dirham tip is roughly £2 - so in your opinion is that a good tip ?

You may think it is or you may want to tip a little more.

In Dubai tips are not mandatory (like some of the notorious places in North America, for example). Anything upwards of 5% is greatly appreciated. Beyond 15% would be excessive. For taxicab, you may round it off or top it as you like.
