Slow boat from Luang Prabang to Houi Xai

There seem to be two options one nearly three times as much as the other. Has anyone used either and can give some feedback please.

Both seem to offer the same trip, overnight in the same place, Pak Bang / Pakbeng

1 - Luang Say - Mekong River Cruise, Euro 283

2 - The Nagi of Mekong, THB.4,600 about Euro 93

To me it seems a no brainer but am I missing something?

Thanks

The slow boat from Huay Xai costs about $30 & stops in Pakbeng overnight. This is the more poplular route as most the people who travel up through Thailand & crosss at Chiang Kong to Huay Xai take the Mekong trip down to LP.

Just ask at any of the ticket agents in town about getting a ticket, you shouldn't pay much more than 300,000Kip. Those trips you've been quoted on there look more like fancy cruises rather than the crammed boats full of backpackers that do this trip everyday.

As the previous poster commented, its all about hte level of comfort. The Nagi will have somewhere between 20-50 people on the baot from what Ive been told, while the normal slow boats cram 70-110 people on a boat.

You get snacks/refreshments on the Nagi, you Byo onthe slow boat.

You pay your own accom when you get to Pak beng for the slow boat, the Nagi books you a guesthouse and you pay Nagi, they pay the guest house - prob a little better quality tho that is yet to be tested :)

The nagi pick you up from your hotel, you get your own way to the dock...

We're giving the Nagi a go for an upstream trip to Huay Xai to do the Gibbon experience in Jan 2010 but might jsut get the regular slow baot, the bus, or cross to Chiang Mai and fly to Luang Prabang (we are trying to maximise our days).

If you pay the $30 for the slow boat you are also picked up at your hotel. Generally only 20 to 30 on the boats, it is impossible to get the numbers quoted. You can buy food and drinks on the slowboat. Everything else is correct

Im beginning to think the numbers bantered around on the general slow boat are done to try and get more ppl on the more expensive boats. We took the Nagi upstream (we were the only two people on it for two days which was pretty sweet) and the guide was constantly telling us there would be 100-150 ppl on the normal boat....

which we passed plenty of on the way and there were lucky to be 20-40 on them. Perhaps there are peak times/seasons when it gets to those numbers though.

Regardless, the nagi trip was easy, comfortable and the crew (a family) were awesome and the food was delicious. We opted for this as we'd just spent days on buses and wanted some comfort instead of another 12-17 on a bus from Luang Prabang to Houy Xai.

We took the speedboat back. Wow. crazy. It SEEMED safe enough, but its the total lack of space that makes it unbearable.

We took the more expensive Luang Say cruise. It was expensive but worth it, especially since we were traveling with my almost 80-year old mother. Their lodge in Pak Beng is remarkable, the food was wonderful and we appreciated the help at the border.

I will be travelling Huay Xai to Luang Prabang next February. For those who went on the Nagi, did you pre-book in advance of just book your ticket one day before? Their website also has for 1,000Thai Baht you get accommodation in a village near the border, breakfast and it includes taking you across the border. They then transfer you to the Nagi. Is this worth it or not?

Thanks.

Huge difference in cost between Nagi and LuangSay. Can anyone provide a comparison between the two trips - what makes one better than the other?

Thanks

Hi Wendy

Have you decided what you are going to do? We will be taking the reverse trip (to LP) in November.
