Nicaragua itinerary for 12 days, help needed!

Hi there!

We are a couple travelling to Nicaragua in August for 12 days.

Our idea was to go for some history and culture, nature and caribbean beach.

We came up with the itinerary below, but it is pretty hard to find information on the last part of our route, so we are in need of some help.

- Granada (city, isletas and mombacho): are 2 days enough?

- Ometepe: 2/3 days?

- Reserva Biologica Indio Maiz and Rio San Juan

- Laguna de Perlas

- Léon

Is this doable at all in 12 days?

We want to avoid boat trips in open sea.

Is there an easy way to go from the Reserva Biologica to Laguna de Perlas and then to Léon?

How nice is Laguna de Perlas to swim?

Thanks a lot!

I am assuming you are the same couple as the recent post here (DouweHorsthuis) and the same couple that has posted on Thorntree twice now (Anafran and Claraf). Very confusing.

Anyway, two days for Granada and Mombacho works. Ometepe 2 full days (3 is better depending also on whether you would climb a volcano). To go to the Rio San Juan from Ometepe you have to take a night ferry on Monday or Thursday. If you skip Los Guatuzos (which takes at least 3 days), you could make your way to a river lodge or El Castillo and visit Indio Maiz from there (at least two days). Then you can take a bus to Managua (or fly but not daily) and make your way to Leon. That would give you 3-4 days in Leon : city, volcanoes, Las Penitas beach.

I would forget about Pearl Lagoon. From El Castillo (Indio Maiz) to San Juan del Norte and on to Bluefields by boat is not an easy trip, would take time and involves a rough boat ride. So your best bet would be to fly to Bluefields from Managua and then take a boat to Pearl Lagoon. I have not been but apparently Pearl Lagoon has no beach and you would have to go to the Pearl Cays which is expensive and takes time.

If you don't like the idea of swimming on Ometepe (lake) and Las Penitas (near Leon) the Corn Islands would be your best bet but you would have to fly there and if you want to go to Little Corn take a boat from Big Corn so you would need several days for it to be worth it meaning you would have to cut something else.

Pretty much agree... I think 12 days warrants a trip down to the Rio San Juan...to some location down there
