Rila lakes in January

Hi we are thinking about coming to Sofia in January. Is it possible to see the Rila lakes in January? We are not keen hikers so would take the chairlift, just keen to get some decent views. What's it like in January? Many thanks in advance

They are all covered with ice and snow and actually you can only imagine there are lakes underneath. There are also some risks related to snow coverage on high attitude. I would not recommend going to lakes during winter, unless you are fit for mountain hikes with the necessary equipment (good shoes, clothes, gethys, sticks, gps, mountain insurance). If you are in Sofia, you can do Boyana lake, which is less risky.

That is actually the same advise I would give. You could also take the lift to Aleko hut on Vitosha mountains and do short walks around. There are many people going there for the view, and depending on the weather you could use your city clothes there for a short stay.

Thanks guys so probably not worth it. When are the months when it's not covered in snow?

During June - September the 7 lakes are something like a bigger walk :) if the weather is good.

In August there are religous celebrations at the lakes and it gets crowded too much.
