Visiting Montevideo for extended stay

Hello, my wife and I are considering a visit to Montevideo in November 2024 and are looking to stay for 3 months. We are from the USA and have spent the past two winters (November through March) in Mexico. We are early in our planning and would welcome any tips on the best neighborhoods, how to find an apartment to rent. We are in our late 50s early 60s, active, enjoy traveling, quaint neighborhoods with coffee shops. Our Spanish language skills have improved but are still not the best. Is there an expat community in Montevideo? Any suggestions or resources would be welcome. Thank you

Hello! I just read your post with questions about Montevideo. Like you we spend the winters in a mild climate. Last winter, in Portugal and a bit in Spain. We just arrived in Montevideo 3 days ago. We will be here 4 weeks. We happened to meet Karen Higgs thru her website. She has written 2 fabulous guide books which we had read. "Guru'Guay Guide to Uruguay" and Guru'Guay Guide to Montevideo. Easily gotten thru Amazon.Long story short, we are staying in her highrise condo for 2 weeks taking care of her cats while she and her husband are on vacation in Brazil. We have good luck renting apartments thru Airbnb these past few years. We always go by the reviews. One should also spend time learning about different neighborhoods before deciding. Also, Karen offers her advise and expertise for a fee to someone coming to Uruguay whether on vacation or relocating. She is a great source. We do our own exploring beforehand however and have never had a problem. We like the older neighborhoods that have character, and are walking distance to grocery stores and other ammenities. We don’t rent cars. Taxis and Ubers are cheap and plentifuHope this helps. BTW we have lived on th Cape, Eastham. My brother owned The Beach Plumb Motel in Orleans for many years a long time ago!
