We're excited to embark on an 8-day naturalist cruise of the northwestern Galapagos starting Dec. 14. We had planned a week in Quito and environs before the cruise, but given the situation on the mainland are thinking of cutting that back to a couple of days and heading to the islands earlier. So we have the "problem" of filling 5 days (Dec. 9-14) in the Galapagos before the cruise leaves Santa Cruz.
Our thought is maybe to fly into San Cristobal, spend 2 nights there, then catch a puddle jumper flight to Santa Cruz and spend 3 nights there. We're not in a rush to pack in loads of strenuous activities since we'll be kept busy once on board the ship, so we're looking to take a more relaxed pace and see a few things we wouldn't on the cruise (which includes Isabela, Fernandia, Santiago and Genovasa).
Are there enough truly unique experiences to make it worth squeezing in both islands in addition to what we're seeing from the boat? Or perhaps too much needless complication? Would it just make more sense to make our base in Puerto Ayora the whole time and make outings from there?
We've heard it's a good time of year to see the seal pups -- is it worth going to San Cristobal for the La Loberia colony or would we see them just as well elsewhere?
Thanks for your insights!
