Is going to Galapagos via Quito safe in June 2024?

We are leaving in two weeks for this vacation including 2 nights in Quito. We are savvy travelers and go low-key in any cities whenever we travel but is it safe currently or should we consider cancelling this trip?

Dear BTDT,

I help about 500 people / year plan, book and enjoy their Galapagos adventures. They almost all spend at least couple of days in Quito before heading to Galapagos. Some enjoy longer stays on the mainland (Ecuador is truly a rich country in terms of nature and culture). Absolutely none have reported any incidents whatsoever since the events of early January, when, for 1-2 days, drug lords / gangs went on a bit of a (very circumscribed) rampage. You are fine.

Of course, you need to keep your wits about you. Leave your diamond necklaces at home, as well as your Rolex watch. Don't flash wads of cash in public, keep your cell phone in your bag, don't try to elbow your way into the drug market... ;-) Stay out of dark, lonely alleys.

I hope you'll feel confident to enjoy Quito. It's a UNESCO World Heritage city - the prettiest capital city in all of South America to me, and well-worth enjoying. You can even hire your private guide if you like.

Warmest regards,

Heather Blenkiron

Heather - Thanks so much for your message! Agree, after reading more posts it seems like things are getting exaggerated a bit in the press. Seems like just traveling to any other city - be smart and don't get lost. The only change we made was not planning to take a public taxi but hired a driver in advance of arriving for our day in Quito but otherwise plan to enjoy the city!. Thanks again.
