JR pass for 14 or 21 days?

Hey guys! Me and my friends are staying 21 days in Japan, and we don't know if we should buy the 21 days or 14 days JR pass. Or schedule is as follow:

Day 1 - Narita Airport to Tokyo

Day 2 - Staying in Tokyo

Day 3 and 4 - Trip to Hiroshima and Miyajima

Day 5 - Kurokawa Onsen town

Day 6 to 14 - Kyoto and day trips to Nara, Narita, Osaka, Himeji and Kanazawa

Day 15 - Stop in Tsumago and journey to Tokyo

Day 16 to 21 - Tokyo and day trips to Nikko and Mount Fuji (and maybe another city in Chiba prefecture if we have the time)

The question is: will we be using the pass for the 21 days? Or is it not worth it to use it while on Tokyo? Thank you!

On the basis of a quick look you can do your long distance travel within 14 days and get the most value out of the 14-day pass.

For Fuji/Hakone and Nikko there are non-JR options so the extra seven days might not be as valuable. However, you can use JR options for both, and of course around the city and to either of the two international airports.

Essentially, the question is: is the extra 13,000 yen more or less than the travel for the arrival day and 16 to 21? A rail-pass "calculator" isn't the right tool to answer that question.

Given you have a round trip to Narita and can use it for those other Tokyo days, I think you will get more than 13000 yen of value out of those seven days. Get the 21 day pass.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer. We decided to take the 21 days pass. By our calculations, it would be better than the 14 days.
