Takayama vs Hakone

Hi guys.

We are going to Japan for a total of 18 days in September.

Itinerary pretty much set, the only question is whether to include Takayama or Hakone.

We have a city-heavy itinerary (Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka) so we want to throw in some more relax village stay in a ryokan. We would probably have 2 days for this, but flexible.

Which one of these would be the best option considering this time of the year?

Thank you!

I visited Hakone once and found it pleasant. I visited Takayama four times and would go again.

Takayama is not a village, but it is a pleasant town in addition to having many historic sites and small museums.

You might combine a visit with a day trip or two to less visited towns nearby. Hida-Furukawa is 15 minutes away: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5975.html I've never been there, but you could yourselves in farms and hillsides in just a few minutes. Here's a sample: https://goo.gl/maps/F4uitVs9N242

These bicycle tours have received excellent reviews: https:/…REVIEWS or you could just walk east from the train station.

Takayama....hand's down the winner vs. Hakone. If you go to Takayama, consider also Kanazawa...this is an onsen option area.

I'd include Takayama-Shirakawago-Kanazawa in your itinerary.

I just went through the same dilemma when planning. We chose Hakone because we are traveling from Tokyo with 2 young children and we wanted less travel time. However, if we did not have the children with us we would be going to Takayama.

If you skip Takayama, you can see a nice collection of old houses from all over Japan, quite close to Tokyo--you can visit as a half-day trip: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3253.html Sarah, I see in your other post that they're one and three years old. I don't have a clear recollection of the paths, but I think good condition, with a few gentle steps. The houses are on a gently sloping area. They have wheelchairs and strollers so much must be accessible. It's a 20 minute walk from the train station so you might want to take a taxi.

Regarding travel time to Takayama, once you're there, you can walk all over town. My understanding of Hakone is that you spend a lot of time on buses, trains and boats.
