Chugoku Region itinerary for 5th Japan visit?

Hi experts, well early days for planning my 5th trip to Japan. This time we are wanting to finally get to Hiroshima and of course Miyajima. we are considering one of the cheaper flights from Tokyo to either Okayama and basing ourselves there for a few days and doing day trips to Hiroshima, Miyajima, Kurashiki and anywhere else that looks awesome or flying to Hiroshima and basing ourselves there, then we will head back on Shinkansen to Kyoto as there are still a lot of things to see there and surrounds then back to Tokyo for a few days, again haven't even done Kamakura or Nikko as yet. Last time we rented a car in Kanazawa and drove the Noto Peninsula. Is there any option to do something similar down Hiroshima/Okayama way? thanks everyone, I know it is early stages and isn't till May 2019 but just want to know I am on the right track. Yes I am checking out Japan Guide and other assorted sites but the DE's on here have always given me such great advice.

Better fly from Tokyo to Hiroshima direct and travel your way back to Kyoto.

If time allows a stay in Miyajima would allow more time to hike up to Mt Misen and to enjoy the island more when the day trippers have left.

Don't miss out World Heritage Himeji castle b/w Okayama and Kobe. Drop by for half day while taking Sanyo Shinkansen back to Kyoto/Osaka.

For driving routes, consider

1. the Shimanami Kaido from Onomichi to Imabari in Shikoku

2. from Kurashiki to Takamatsu in Shikoku via the Seto bridge

3. from Wakayama to explore the coastline of southern Wakayama Peninsula including Shirahama onsen town, Kii Katsuura and Kumano Taisha, Falls.

The Chugoku region including San-in and San-yo is full of interesting places. It can easily take up a couple of weeks (if not more) for an in-depth exploration.

A few years back we did a road trip of the region during autumn and loved it. Below are some of our trip photos posted on the forum.

The inland sea is beautiful! You might enjoy some quiet beach time on rural Shiraishi Island (a ferry ride from Kasaoka); there is an International Villa there to encourage foreign tourism.
