Driving from Tokyo->Osaka via Mt Fuji?

Hi there! Myself and 3 others are planning a trip to Japan. We are spending the first week in Tokyo, and then plan on driving to Hakone near Mount Fuji to stay at a spa resort for 2 nights, and then driving down to Osaka to spend another 5 days. I know that most people recommend the train for the journey from Tokyo->Osaka, however we really wanted to experience the Mt Fuji region, and it seems difficult to get around with public transport especially if we want to go sightseeing and have lots of suitcases. The price of the car hire including one-way fee, petrol, and tolls, does not seem much more than the train option. Would anyone reccomend this or have any other advice? We will be travelling back from Osaka to Tokyo via train (not by car) so will not need to repeat this journey.

Rent a car when you get to the Fuji area. If you don't mind the drop-off charge, then spend 2-3 days in the area to visit Hakone as well and then return the car at Odawara. From Odawara, it's much more efficient to catch Shinkansen to Osaka.

Bear in mind the 35min Shinkansen to Odawara will cost you over NZ$200+ ! Maybe better to hire the car in Tokyo to save money - really easy to drive - not aggressive/stressful like Oz or NZ. Perhaps stop off at Umai Toriyama restaurant in far west Tokyo for an amazing lunch experience along the way. (Stunning restaurant) After your Hakone stay how many more days car hire were you planning?

agree with Sammy in #2.

The easiest and economical option to Fuji 5-lake is to take frequent highway bus from Tokyo/Shinjuku in around 2 hours direct in less than JPY2K per adult. From there pick up a car to explore both Fuji 5-lake and Hakone as mentioned.

If you intend to drive from Odawara all the way to Osaka, be prepared to spend at least 4-5 hours on the expressways before arriving at Osaka. Traffic can be terrible at the exits into all major cities in Japan depending on time of the day. By Tokaido Shinkansen it'd be less than 2.5 hours direct running at 300km/h.
