Itinerary Suggestion

I've planned a 10-day Japan trip for a family of 5 (parents + 14, 16, and 20-yr old). Busy trip (as we like it): Tokyo, Matsumoto, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and back to Tokyo.

We may have some spare time at the end - basically we wake up in Hiroshima on a Tuesday morning (in a few weeks, August) and are flying out of Narita @ 4pm Wednesday. So we have 1.5 days and all we need to do is take the train up to Tokyo and out to Narita, which should be ~6 hours or so.

We'll be taking the train throughout our trip. Thoughts on places we could stop along the way between Hiroshima and Tokyo? It would need to be something along that train line for a ~half-day outing.

If you want to stay on the Shinkansen route, consider Himeji, Okayama, Osaka and Nagoya. Of course you can go back to Tokyo and do last minute shopping as well.

It's nice to step by Okayama, Kurashiki, Naoshima, Himeji etc. on your way back from Hiroshima to Tokyo. But, it might be better to step by some places closer to Tokyo, such as Mt. Fuji area (Hakone or Kawaguchiko), considering when the situation of bad weather, like Typhoon, happened.

I think there are several ways to go to Matsumoto from Tokyo, 1) by Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano, stepping by the Snow Monkey Park, and a JR local from Nagano to Matsumoto, 2) JR Chuo Line Limited Express directly from Shinjuku.

Here is a 15 day itinerary, going to Takayama/Shirakawago/Kanazawa in addition to Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima/Miyajima, for your reference.
