Tokyo to Takayama train line closed

Hi,

Planning our trip at the moment, we're heading south from Tokyo and planning an over night stop in Takayama, as the train line is closed do you think were better off picking another location? Our next stop is Koyoto. We will have the rail pass so want to use the free travel, depending on the cost of a bus. Were travelling near the end of September.

Matt

Welcome to Japan Forums!

Service by way of Nagoya is expected to resume August 11 (check here for updates: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5908.html ) Meanwhile there are local trains and shuttle buses. which I guess are covered by the pass.

There are several ways of getting to Takayama from Tokyo including the train to Matsumoto and then the bus through the mountains to the town. Or direct to Kanazawa and Nohi bus to Takayama, rather than from Toyama as that link is taking a while to be restored.

Also, as noted, the train line between Nagoya and Takayama is due to reopen in around a week from now, but the substitute buses still make it accessible.
