Places to add to my itinerary

Oct 25, 26: Nagoya

Oct 27-30: undecided

Oct:31-nov1: Tokyo

Nov2-7th: undecided

Nov8-11: Kyoto

Hello all.. looking to fit places into my itinerary. I will be getting a 14 day JR Pass and activating it on Oct 27th so I am open to travel anywhere.

I want to add Kawanzawa somewhere in there and maybe see a place with good onsens or hiking. Any places with okay nightlife would be great to. I only have the dates for Nagoya, Tokyo and Kyoto locked in, so I am hoping to hit the best places inbetween or near those locations.

What would you add to my Itinerary? looking for any suggestions!

Thanks!

Nagoya is in the middle between Tokyo and Kyoto, so it seems that you will be backtracking. You could save money by starting in Tokyo and then finishing in the Kansai area (Kyoto, Osaka, etc.). Along that line, you could arrive in Tokyo and depart from Osaka (Kansai airport), a so-called open jaw booking. You could get a 7-day pass if the itinerary was rearranged, for example.

How about 2-7th in Kyoto as there is a lot to see plus some day trips and the remaining days at Hiroshima with day trips to Miyajima and Iwakuni

27-30 is just about right to add Nakasendo hike (from Magome to Tsumago) , go to Hirayu onsens and do Takayama-Shirakawago-Kanazawa.

I would add few days to Tokyo, 2 are so short. You could do a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo.

From Tokyo down to Hiroshima & Miyajima. Lots of interesting places to visit or stop before returning to Kyoto ( Kurashiki, Okayama, Himeji to name a few), have a look at www.japan-guide.com for inspiration.

Flights to Nagoya are way cheaper for some reason so we are starting there. Also Tokyo needed to be the 31st for an event we are attending.

Although it may reach the tail end of the autumn foliage season in the area (early-mid Oct is a better time) on Oct 27-30 consider going to Shin-Hotaka which can be done as an easy side trip from Takayama. Hopefully you can still enjoy koyo by the foot of the mt and there are hiking trails halfway up the mt in Nabedaira Kogen. Riding the unique double decker ropeway further up the mt will yield spectacular Northern Alps scenery with yet more hiking possibility at top. Just beware by late Oct there is likely to be snow at the mt top.
