Tipping in Japan

I would like to confirm that it is not necessary to tip the staff at high end hitels such as Hilton, Hyatt or Conrad in Japan. Is it correct? And is it also not necessary to tip at a ryokan (not those fancy high-end ryokans)? Thanks so much in advance for your kind reply!

Tipping is generally unheard of. It's a bit different at a fancy Ryokan but there is an ettiquette to it that is not simple to understand.
