7 or 14 day JR pass

My husband and I are travelling to Japan for two weeks.

Our itinerary is 6 nights in Tokyo, with day trips to Niko,Hakone and kamakura. And 5 nights in Kyoto with day trips to Osaka,Hiroshima, Miyajima and Nara. We are not sure if we should purchase a 7 or 14 JR pass.

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Where is your outgoing flight? Do you need to return to Tokyo and catch a flight from NRT/HND or is your flight out of KIX or ???

Buy a 7-day JR Pass @JPY29K+ and activates on the day departing from Tokyo to Kyoto by Tokaido Shinkansen. Use it to travel to Hiroshima/Miyajima from Kyoto before it expires which would more than payoff.

Day trip to Nikko - consider the Tobu Nikko Pass.

Day trip to Hakone - consider the Odakyu Hakone Freepass.

Kamakura is an easy day trip from Tokyo served by JR commuter trains. A round trip costs less than JPY1.5K.

If you fly out from KIX, the 7 day JR Pass pays off, but the 14 day JR Pass is a close call.

If you return to and fly back from Tokyo, both the 7 day and the 14 day JR Pass pay off.

Therefore, if can change your flight, it is good to fly back from Tokyo, and use the 14 day JR Pass.

If you go to Kyoto and Nara with more important historic heritages, I personally think it is better to skip Kamakura, so that you won't "Templed Out" before you go to Kyoto and Nara.

I consider it a poor idea to day trip to Hiroshima/Miyajima from Kyoto. You should overnight and then see Himeji on the way back to Kyoto.

I agree wholeheartedly with axing Kamakura if you are going to Kyoto/Nara....the Todaiji is the real thing and the Kotokuin is the lesser copy. That might also mean you can cut a day in Tokyo and devote it to Kyoto.

If you get a JR Pass, do not become a slave to it because sometimes non-JR lines are more convenient. So you should get an IC travel card like SUICA or PASMO in Tokyo, which can also be used elsewhere, for local transportation.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

So many different ways to get to destinations !!!!

7 day JR pass , is what I will be doing. Out of interest, if we do decide to go to Kamakura, what’s the best way to get there without a JR pass, and how much is it. As I will activate my JR when I t4avel to Kyoto.I was looking at the express romance car ?

D1 Nikko Day trip

D2 Tokyo to Kyoto

D3 Kyoto

D4 Kyoto Nara Day trip

D5 Kyoto Hiroshima Miyajima day trip

D6 Kyoto

D7 Kyoto to Airport

7 day JR pass covers them all, doesnt it?
