Shirakawago Winter Light Up - or not?

Hi All

I am planning a family trip in January 2019 with my husband and 2 teenage boys and want to visit Shirakawago. The pictures I have seen of the Winter Light Up look gorgeous, but I am concerned that the town and nearby Takayama will be very busy during this period.

Is the Winter Light Up worth visiting with the crowds, or would we be better to visit on a normal day/evening with less people?

Also note the restrictions on visiting during the light-up. https:/…content-4-3 You would have to plan ahead and make the necessary reservations.

I cannot advise you if it will be worthwhile, but I can tell you that you will have a memorable visit if you go in the daytime, and not on a weekend. Even if you don't go on light-up nights the train to and from Takayama is full at times, so do make a reservation ahead of time.

it is extremely difficult to get a ticket to the observatory to see the light-up unless you book an accommodation there. Daytime Shirakawago is still worth for a visit, do plan ahead, the bus reservation starts 1 month ahead of your departure. Book here: https://japanbusonline.com/en/AllRouteList
