We'll be in Indonesia in July for 21 full days. Plan is to start our trip in Jakarta, do Krakatau then fly to Kalimantan before returning to Semarang. Looking to hire a car with driver to take us down to Borobudur, Yogyakarta, Prambanan etc. Then head east to Mt Bromo and Mt Ijen. Finish Java tour at Ketapang, ferry across to Gillimanuk in Bali. We've been to Bali before but we're keen to explore a bit further afield than the main tourist areas of Kuta and Ubud so we're thinking of having a driver meet us at Gillimanuk and doing a "cooks" tour of the north and north west of the island over 2 or 3 days before depositing us at Nusa Dua for a few days by the pool before we head for home.
So Ihave three main concerns:
Kalimantan - main reason for going is to visit Tanjung Puting for 3day/2night Klotok trip. Is it worth going further afield whilst in the vicinity (eg. Pontianak, Banjamasin, Samarinda)? We'll ahve the kids with us so we're not planning to do any long distance trekking or exploring the upper reaches of jungle rivers. But we are interested in seeing some longhouse and river life in general.
East Java - is a road trip realistic given the choked state of the roads in Java?
Bali - what's worth seeing in the north/north west?
Looking forward to some informed feedback.
