Sanur v Karon (Phuket, Thailand)
Save

Hi all,

We have just returned from a trip to Karon, Phuket and loved the area. Quiet (compared to Patong) but with plenty to do for a pair of "young at heart" who aint dead yet!

I am now researching our next holiday late oct-ealy nov 2011 and am considering Bali.

Am i totally wrong in saying that Sanur might be on par with Karon as Kuta = Patong? We also loved Batu Ferringhi (especially at night) for a totally relaxing holiday.

We enjoy shopping (yes, even he likes a bit of shopping), local restaurants, and a drink or 2 (or even 3) but without the crazy crowd in bars (like Patong) and of course sighseeing.

Cheers,

shazz

Hi Shazz

Sanur is quieter than Kuta, so if you want to compare it to Karon in that way, then you are probably right! Karon is so much quieter than Patong. However I would say that Sanur is quieter than Karon....confused yet?

However, Sanur doesnt have the same sort of beach that Karon has - nor is it in close walking distance to other areas, like Karon is to Kata.

Sanur actually reminds me more of somewhere like Lamai in Koh Samui. It has a long beach path that has restaurants and hotels all the way along it. It is very family oriented, and has a long main street behind the beach that has many shops, cafes and restaurants.

You can easily ride a bicycle around Sanur, as it doesnt get as busy as the Kuta/Legian area.

The beach is very protected but IMO nowhere near as nice as Karon Beach - although it doesnt have the strong tides that Karon gets either.

We love Sanur - to us it is a beach holiday, with the added bonus of being so close to may more attractions around the island.

thanks for your quick replies...

Whilst we like te ocean, we are not beach goers (hate the sand). We went for a walk once to Karon Beach and spent the rest of the time around the pool if we wanted a swim.

I suppose what we are looking for is an area that has cheap restaurants and good shopping/markets. And have the option of a short taxi ride to even better shopping/markets.

Basically, like Karon or Batu-Ferringhi at night.

cheers,

Sanur sounds as if it would suit you just fine if you like karon. I often holiday in both Phuket and Bali on the same trip. Sanur ticks all your boxes. It is more relaxing, has lovely restaurants, bars, some night life, plenty of shopping, great hotels, and yet you are still only a short taxi ride from the busier areas and larger shopping centres and it is a good place to be based for sightseeing. I am sure you would be happy there. Accommodation books out fast so start searching.

Sanur isn't as high-rise as Batu Ferringhi. And there's no night market in Sanur. Or food courts. Sanur is also a lot bigger than BF. So it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges. However, Sanur does have a nice relaxed feel, without being too loud or busy. Plenty of restaurants, a handful of bars, beach cafes, a beach market, shops, it ticks all of your boxes.

thanks everyone for your replies.

Whilst we enjoyed BF, it was quiet during the day, so was more or a relaxing holiday to unwind. Karon was busy night and day. Both were good for shopping though!

Sounds like Sanur might be ideal for this pair of 'young at heart' oldies for a change.

Now to convince 'he who must be obeyed, NOT' that Bali is our next destination!
