New law about to be passed in Indonesia?

Has anyone heard that there is a new law about to be passed in Indonesia (including Bali) that prohibits anything that will raise "sexual desire" such as wearing bikinis on the beach, naked statues in Bali, etc? Apparently members of the public are allowed to act on these laws - they can do a citizen arrest if they think you look indecent. This is supposed to be go thru about the 23rd of this month.

Bit of a shocker!!!!

Pamela - are you for real, read that link you posted and have copied some parts of it below for any one else who is interested - hope I haven't violated any posting guidelines in doing so.

Cheers and thanks for your info. x

ANTI-PORNOGRAPHY BILL

Showing cleavage or bottoms or belly buttons - 2 months to 10 months in jail

Kissing in public - 1 year to 5 years in jail

Nudity - 2 months to 12 months in jail (So the Balinese who currently have nowhere to bath except in the river are to go smelly, and tourists best be careful with those hotel curtains!). Interpretation even extends to forbidding tight fitting clothes

Erotic dancing - 18 months to 7 years in jail (So the Balinese 'Jogged' dance is history and so is modern western style dancing; bang goes the club scene!). Even making provocative movements such as girls bending over are to be outlawed.

Being in possession of a sexual aid such as a vibrator or ribbed condom - 3 years to 15 years in jail

Being in possession of a 'porno' film which we understand also means video footage in your camera of your wife in a bikini on the beach in Thailand - 8 months to 7 years in jail.

Having sex with someone of the same gender, or with a dead person or with an animal - 18m to 7 years in jail

Masturbation is also to be outlawed

The details in the last post are not entirely correct, but the new proposed law is indeed very worrying.

Remember though the many of things covered by the new law are, in fact, already illegal eg. public nudity.

Also, as with the sharia inspired laws that have been passed in many areas of the country, enforcement of laws in Indonesia is very lax.

So yes the new law is wrong, and it is a disturbing sign, but as with so much here, what actually happens, even if the law is passed, is likely to be pretty much the same as now.

HI,

I just posted the link form information on the net. Here is an article fromthe Jakarta Post.

thejakartapost.com/news/2008/09/18/house-ope…

plus related articles below.

At least 5,000 Balinese protested in Bali so the Bill if passed has lots of serious implications for Bali.

But as with anyhting in Indonesia it takes ages for things to get done- so this will probably drag on for ages and then hopefully disappear.

Is this a carry-on from the same sort of legislation that was passed about 18 months ago or is it an extra to that?

Hey BJ how are ya? How is the family?

i did hear that bikinis were going to be banned, but wasnt sure how serious it all was.

I dont wear one anyway (too many lumps LOL)

i think its probably not a bad idea to ban the bikini in public but not at the pool or the beach.

I dont know if this will actually happen, but am curious as to why now???

The legislation wasn't actually passed. This is still the same discussion about that legislation.

Hey Auds - yeah we are all very well, how are all your boys?

Don't think the bikini on the beach is a huge thing in itself, just what it could lead to.

On a link that Pamela gave in the above post, I read apparently they want to quickly pass this legislation as a type of "Ramadan Gift", but alot of the people of Bali are not too pleased as some of them make a living out of carvings of nude figures, phallic symbols etc. and are worried it will affect handicrafts (paintings, statues, even some of the traditional balinese dances).

Quite interesting.

If this passes when is it supposed to go into effect?
