Understanding currency!

We are travelling from the UK and are trying to get our head around understanding the Indonesian rupiah, e.g. £100 equals 1,872,312?! Is there an easier way of understanding how there currency works so we can keep a track on what we are spending please?

100k equals approx: 5 UK pounds.

or nearly 20k equals: 1 pound.

Simple!

Rp 115,000 = 6 quid = 4 hour buffet with free drinks at the Skygarden, Kuta.

Rp 230,000 = 12 quid = 1 night in a cheap hotel in Poppies 2 Lane, Kuta.

I keep a currency exchange App on my mobile phone and add currencies when I need them and remove them when no longer required. The rates are self adjusting when I have WIFI and even when there is no signal the last rate won;t have changed much anyway.

If not, follow Balirunner's advice as it is close enough to give you a rough idea.

Hi MLC88 The rates offered in Bali are to the £ today’s rate in Kuta is 18500. This rate changes daily and sometimes twice daily. Just multiply x 100 and simple you get 1850000. Hope this helps.

There's a 1,000k note and coin.

500, 200, 100 coins.

Coins aren't worth much.

For us Aussies 1 cent = 100k coin

They also have new and old banknotes in circulation.

hey i agree with balirunner, just multply the pound value by 20,000 to get how much it is in IDR. you can then take a bit off, like 50p per 100k to be conservative.

or use a calculator with the exact exchange rate.

and get the clarity mastercard, great for taking money out abroad, you will get a better exchange rate then converting cash out there

Typo fix:

1 Aussie cent equals 100 rupiah not 100k

Hi MLC,

In addition most restaurants/warungs have their menus outside and normally replace the last 3 "000" with K so makes easy reading. Cheap small beer around IDR25k-28k for instance.

I think IDR20k to the pound is close enough. IDR300k is 16quid.

Hi MLC,

Yes it is confusing converting from pounds to IDR, however, after a day you will know exactly what the value is. Just download a currency app and play around with the rates before you leave.

Always check your change in Bali, they conveniently short change on a regular basis.
