Indonesia Travel Wish List

Good morning all!

I have the opportunity due to my circumstances to travel to Indonesia at least once a year and although I have been very fortunate to see and do some extraordinary things there are still many places I'd like to visit. My wife is Indonesian so I have had many trips that maybe the regular traveler wouldn't but the below list is my wishlist to accomplish over the coming years.

(in no particular order)

1. Krakatau, West Java

2. Taman Nasional Tanjung Puting, South Kalimantan, Borneo

3. Komodo Nasional Park

4. Lake Toba, North Sumatra

5. Ujung Kulon Nasional Park, West Java

6. Prambanan Temple, Central Java

7. Ulun Danu Temple, Bali

8. Pagaruyung Palace, West Sumatra

9. Tana Toraja, Rantepao, Sulawesi

10. Mount Rinjani, Lombok

I have been to Borobudur so, although I'd go back without hesitation, this is the places I haven't seen. My question to you is, what would be on your list? I'm sure I've missed some spectacular scenery or architectural wonder. What would you recommend seeing?

Kind Regards,

Rich, U.K.

Thanks Stef. After watching a television program on Lake Toba it hooked me on wanting to go.

What was Prambanan like? I went to Borobudur which is close by but missed the opportunity to see it at the time.

Radjaff - The national parks would really interest me. What sets them aside from other parks on Java? The main reason I wanted to see Ujung Kulon was because of the chance to see Javanese Rhinos, albeit a rare chance.

Q-Cuppster - Mount Kelimutu looks unique, 3 crater lakes a one of a different colour. Raja Ampat looks like paradise! Added to my list.

Thank you for your replies so far.

Ujung Kulon National Park is in Banten instead of West Java.

Feel free to search Pulau Sempu, Malang, East Java

My apologies Don.

Pulau Sempu looks ace. That's another place that would interest me. It sounds like it's a good island for hiking!

Hi Rich,

If Pulau Sempu looks ace, you should also see Pulau Satonda off Sumbawa:

And as for volcanoes, IMHO none beat Tambora on Sumbawa island. Next year, 2015, it will be 200 years since Tambora blew its top, causing 1816 in Europe to be the year without a summer:

For Prambanan see my page: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/c8969/12745d/, including the travelogues of the Ramayana Ballet.

I went hiking in Ujung Kulon NP in 2005: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/c8969/125e01/. Chances to see the rhinos virtually nil.

There is so much more.

If you go to Flores, should not pass by Riung: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/c8969/12712d/ and the Yellow Crater Lakes: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/21377a/

Do you take an interest in traditional lifestyle?

Boti in West Timor: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/1e3bbe/

Kampung Dukuh in West Java: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/1d7a44/

You can indeed spend lots of yearly visits to Indonesia without getting bored.

Thank you Theo, very informative.

I studied geography, geology and environmental science during my college days so any national parks, volcanoes, mountains etc. really capture my interest. I did learn about Tambora, Merapi and Krakatau.

Indonesia is somewhere that really gets my passion for all things natural and travel ignited.

Thank you for sharing your views with me.

Just out of interest, during my travels to Indonesia I have never taken a hike through a national park or a wildlife reserve. Are there any of these that you would recommend? I will more than likely be doing these with my Indonesian family.
