Tipping is not necessary in China, it is not the local custom. I have never tipped any.

No, you are not obliged to give your Tibetan guide and driver a tip. But if they did a good job for you, it's a sign of appreciation that you give them a little tip. That is normal in Tibet. How much you want to give is up to you.

It is a strange double standard. Chinese do not and are not expected to tip, only Westerners are.

It depends on service of tour guide and driver. If you think they did a good job for you, you can give them USD5~Usd10/per day.

Tipping to your guide/driver is to show appreciation. Usually for a guide, it is about CNY200 a day (Chinese Yuan) and CNY100 for the driver. It's up to you though how much you want to give, as it is depended upon the service.

I don't know where #5 gets the amount of the tips of, but they are nonsense.

@ #5

Let's do some math on yor suggestion. Take the typical 4WD with 4 tourists for a 1 week trip. That would be RMB 200 x 7 days x 4 persons and works out to RMB 5600 or about US $ 820.-

That means the driver gets almost US $ 3300 net per month plus his local salary. I'd say not a bad deal.

It's not compulsory and it's all up to you.

Of course it is not compulsary as it is against the tourism law of China to demand tips.

Tourism "professionals" with their self serving posts should be banned from these forums.
