Tibet and Thailand for 3 wks this summer

We are planning a trip from Florida to both Tibet and Thailand this summer for a total of three weeks. Any suggestions on which country would be easiest to fly into and out of. We are just in the planning stages so could start with Bancock or Lhasa. We are thinking of taking the train in China to Lhasa. Which would be the best city to get it, Chengdu, Chengquing of somewhere else? We were looking into river cruises in Thailand- we want to go to Chaing Mai and that area. We're not sure if we can fly from Lhasa to Bangcock or the other way around. Do we have to back through China? We know it could be tricky. We are open to independent as well as group travel. Do many people speak English in the cities and villages of Thailand and Tibet? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My preferred entry points for the train to Lhasa would be Beijing, Chengdu and Xining. I presume the easiest place for you to fly into, would be Beijing. In which case, I would do Beijing -- train -- Lhasa. This, including sightseeing in both, would probably take up about 10-12 days of your trip.

Are you open for a novel way to get from China to Thailand? There's a possibility of taking a boat from Jinghong in southern Yunnan province to Chiang Saen in Thailand, passing Laos on the way (won't need visa). Check out http://www.iantaylor.org/y_mekong.html for more details.

If you decide to take that route, you might consider flying Lhasa -- Shangri-La, then working your way overland. I would probably choose to stopover at Lijiang (2-3 days), take an overnight bus to Kunming, then another overnight bus to Jinghong.
