Cairo Airport

What's it like? We have a 6 hour layover. Good shopping? Restaurants? Interesting see or do?

More or less, the same as any other airport serving a major metropolitan area.

At both T1 and T2, you will have to remain in the arrivals hall between flights, unless you purchase the $25 visa. There are no facilities in these areas. If you buy the visa, you can go outside the arrival hall, and enter the pre-departure area. In both terminals, until you have a boarding pass, you will not be able to pass through immigration and enter the areas where the shops and restaurants are. At T1, there is a restaurant where you can buy beverages and food, or set up a laptop and work. No WiFi in this terminal yet. Terminal 2 is brand new, and there are not a lot of facilities; I was there Jan. 6 between flights, and there was a duty-free in progress--open, but limited, and a small snack bar where you could purchase beverages and pre-packaged snacks. Other coffee shops and restaurants were under construction. If you fly into T2, and depart on your next flight from T1, the situation might be different. Other passengers in transit on Jan. 6 were bused from the arrivals hall to T1, but I don't know where they were allowed to stay for the duration. The good news is that T2 does have WiFi.

The coffee shop is good, as is McDonalds. Wifi is sketchy. Enjoy ;)

I'd suggest checking out the connected Le Meridian hotel, but with 6 hours, it may not be worth the trouble (long lines at check-in, heavy security).

The OP did not mention which terminal they will be using and whether they have to change terminals and / or if one flight is a domestic flight.

But I guess Terminal 3 is probably the best for international transiting though there is not that much to do or see.
