2 Weeks Georgia Trip in mid February-2017

Dear All,

I am planning a trip to Georgia with my wife in mid February for 2 weeks (14-15 days) from Qatar. Hopefully, from 10-Feb-2017 to 24-Feb-2017. I want to cover whole of Georgia during this period.

Some places like Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Gudauri, Kazbegi, Gori, Borjomi, Bakuriani are already part of my travel plan. I believe, 1 week is enough for these areas, I am still left with 7 spare days in hand which I would like to use for exploring other areas.

I was wondering ,

1. If this is the suitable time to visit Black Sea (Batumi and Poti)...???

2. If it is worthy to visit wineries in Kakheti region during winter season...???

3. If I can find green mountains with flowing rivers and waterfalls in Zugdidi and Kutaisi areas during this time of the year...???

If the answer is no, I will cut short my trip accordingly.

Moreover, what should be the best way for transportation in the most relaxed manner. Should I hire a car with a driver-cum-guide for this entire period...???

I am planning to stay in different cities (3 days Tbilisi, 2 days Gudauri, 2 days Borjomi, 2 days Batumi, 2 days Zugdid or Kutaisi, 2 days Kakheti). If I have a personal car, it will help me for inter-city trasfer as well as for exploring nearby religions.

Please help me in planning my trip so that I can enjoy my vacation in best possible way.

Regards,

Hammad

Hi Hammad,

You are right. In first week of your visit you can visit Eastern Georgian regions, Kartli, Kakheti, Javakheti, including wineries and the cities you have mentioned: Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Gudauri, Kazbegi, Gori, Borjomi, Bakuriani. Also you can visit many other cities and places if you well the road and map.

Next week of your stay you can visit Western Georgian regions, including Batumi and other Black Sea side resorts, also Kutaisi, Zugdidi and other areas with beautiful nature and landscapes, waterfalls and canyons. However Western Georgia is nice to visit Spring-Summer, you can visit them in February too.

Green mountains you can visit in Borjomi and Adjara region, but it is a big chance that snow comes at these mountains in February. Please note that there are mostly serpentine roads to the mountainous regions of Georgia and the roads are sometimes snowy and frozen in Winter.

Bests regards,

George

Hello Hammad,

as to your questions:

1. Winter is low season at the sea side, it´s cold and humid.

2. Wineries can be visited any time of the year, though you won´t be able to witness the wine making process or see the winestocks. But many wineries can organize for you a workshop in chacha making (a strong spirit similar to Vodka / Grappa) or in traditional meals.

3. No, in Zugdidi the weather is slightly warmer, but there are no green hills and valleys at the moment.

Since you are planning to go to Zugdidi, you can have a look at Svaneti - the road from Zugdidi takes about 3-4 hours and it´s worth to stay there at least for 2-3 days. Svaneti is very beautiful in winter, but of course it´s a snow landscape´.

As for the transportation, I would rather recommend hiring a car with driver, because you are planning to drive a lot and not all roads are good in Georgia. It´s safer when you have someone local, who knows the local driving style plus who knows what a road on Googlemaps actually looks like in reality (you will find quite a few roads, that look like 1h on maps, but in reality take about 3h and good driving skills).

Best,

Maria

6. Re: 2 Weeks Georgia Trip in mid February-2017

George and Maria... Many Thanks for your valuable suggestions. :-)

I am planning to have a circular trip of Georgia...

Tbilisi-Kakheti-Gudauri-Gori-Kutaisi-Svaneti-Zugdidi-Poti-Batumi-Borjomi/Barkuriani-Tbilisi...

with night-stays of 1-3 days at each destination depending on the number of attractions. e.g. Tbilisi-3, Kvareli-1, Gudauri-2, Kutaisi-1, Svaneti-2, Zugdidi-1, Batumi-1, Bakuriani-2... is it feasible if I have a car with with driver for this whole journey...???

As I mentioned earlier, I want to see the greenery in Georgia as well as to play in snow with my daughter... Is it possible if I postpone my visit to early March instead of February, so that there will still be snow in Gudauri/Bakuriani/Svaneti, and on the other hand, Greenery may return in Kakheti/Zugdidi/Kutaisi.

Waiting for your feedback...

Reagrds,

Hammad

Hi Hammad,

You are right, you will visit greenery in March than in February in Georgia, however April is more green than March in Georgia and you can enjoy in snow and skiing resorts in the beginning of April too.

Best regards,

George

Yes sir!

the mid of March is the most ideal period for your trip. You have got 2 weeks and unfortunately in February you can not see as more things as march and 10 days is enough for this time. So if you come in mid of March you'd better to take a driver who knows directions well and you will have a chance to see more places greening landscapes and still snow cracks in Kazbegi. It's a little bit dangerous and under risk right now and in March the road will be cleaned and be possible to claim for Gergeti trinity church in Kazbegi. Take my suggestion from my experience, I spent an unforgettable time in Georgia last April

Best regards

Steven

Hello Hammad,

yes, I would also recommend to go rather in March and April instead of February. Anyway, the weather in March and early April is quite unpredictable, usually it´s already warmer in lowlands, but strong wind and occasional rain are usual as well. Taking this, I would recommend to have a flexible schedule - just have a list of places you want to visit and then decide shortly before you go about the order, after checking the weather forecast.

Enjoy your trip!

Maria
