Sleeping at Darvaza gas crater

Dear all,

We want to visit the gas crater on the way from Ashgabat to Dashoguz and ideally stay overnight. What is the best way to do this?

We don't carry any camping equipment. I've heard that there is a yurt which offers sleeping right next to the crater - is that correct? Otherwise there is the tea house but it's next to the road.

Thanks a lot!

I've camped there several times, however all times about 3 yeas ago as well. The crater is very isolated and most definitely no yurt or tea house. However you will cross camels and other desert animals! I recommend just sleeping in your car as there can be animals lurking around. It is truely an amazing experience!

If are going to Derwaza on your own you need to prepare something for camping as there are no camping facilities nearby. Otherwise you need to hire a Turkmen driver from a travel agency. The drivers will have the tents.

I saw there is one chakhana which offered me 200M for the return trip to the crater and one night sleep. It was so expensive.

Then i saw a contruction site ard 1km next to the chakhana and the police stop, which offered me 60m a return trip to crater and 20m for sleeping in the little container-like house. But the workers also sleep there at night as well.

Although information from internet says that there are some chakhanas, but I couldn't see them. And there was no yurt near the crater unless you paid for a tour to sleep overnight in the yurt.

Hi, in this case i would advise you to book a driver and sleeping facilities from a travel agent. The travel agents can provide you with all facilities that you will need in such vast desert.

About 2-3 years ago there wasn't any Yurts but now there are some yurts . The yurts usually receives tourists from April to the end of October . Sometimes it depends on weather of course.
